Hey guys so here's the problem I'm dealing with:

I just recently upgraded from my buddy's old 760 to a 1060 6gb. I expected to run games at fairly high to ultra settings, but I've been experiencing lots of frame stutter and drops down to like 40-50 frames, especially looking at, say, long draw distance and high particle scenes in games such as battlefield 1. My specs are:

Intel i5 7600k

8gb DDR4 Corsair LPX 2400mhz (1x8gb stick)

MSI b250 m3 (I know it was my first PC build and I didn't get a Z board because I had no idea you couldn't overclock. Looking to replace it soon)

WD M.2 SATA 1TB SSD

Cooling is good, have a 2 pipe cooler master t2 and never go above 60C in CPU temps, and system never really strays over 35C.

Also, when running BF1 or other demanding games, my RAM usage goes to around 80%, CPU hits 100%, and GPU gets to around the 80s in terms of usage as well. My buddy thought that it might be due to the motherboard, but I was just wondering if it was a possible other issue before I go and spend 150$+ on a new mobo.

Thanks!

Did you update drivers? Usually, these types of issues are fixed through driver updates. Also, a 2 pipe CPU cooler sounds insufficient. You should go for atleast a 8 pipe. My recommendation is to buy a new Z motherboard and buy a liquid cooler with it. You will definitely enjoy the silence and speed.

you're experiencing a CPU bottleneck in those demanding games because a 4 core 4 thread CPU ain't really cutting it anymore in late 2018

Makes sense, especially with the 100% usage I was experiencing. But with 100% usage wouldn't it make sense to see higher temps on the CPU? Also, would overclocking to around 4.5-4.8 make any difference on the Z board?

The motherboard has nothing to do with it...the fact that you are running only 8GB in single channel mode isn't helping either, personally i would order another one of that same stick of RAM you got, and then i would look for an i7-7700 or 7700K (6700 or 6700K also an option).

Overclocking the CPU will make a SMALL difference, but what you need is a more capable CPU with more threads and more cache.

Best option till you can upgrade is possibly to reduce graphics or to reduce resolution -I am guessing 1080p or higher.

maybe just drop to 1280x780 and see if temps drop great enough to make better frame rate.

what games are you running? bf1 for sure is a high demanding game. you need some threads with that cpu and some ram. 8 gigs is not enough breathing room.

Also running games like Insurgency Sandstorm, BF4, ARMA 3, and I was thinking about buying other games like Destiny 2, Escape from Tarkov, and SQUAD.

have you run any branchmark tests to see what usage is across the system? it should tell you the whole story.

You need an i7

I had same issue as you ~1 year ago or a bit more when I bought my 1070 with my i5,

Upgraded to i7 and bottleneck is gone.
