I'm a complete noob when it comes to overclocking, eventhough i've had my pc for three years now. I've changed the GPU, curently running a GTX 1050 Ti 4Gb, and that's it basically.

So a few days ago i decided to try out the new forza horizon 4 demo, and it runs it pretty good, stable 60's on mid-low settings (the game looks amazing). But i said to myself that i should try overclocking my GPU to pump up those FPS' and therefore increase the quality settings. And so i did. No problems at all untill I launch the game. At this point i get a black screen that forces me to manually shut down my rig and even after restart the issue persists. Now that's weird. I changed my peripherals recently, the new ones have LED's and before this my card had no problem with OC, but now it does (Idk if this is relevant at all but...). I don't know if this might be related to my PSU not delivering enough power but this issue is bugging me quite a bit.

If anyone has any ideas, help is much appreciated.

My pc specs:

  • Alienware X51 R1 (Don't roast me please i didn't know as much back then, if i were to buy one now i'll build it myself, got it for great price anyways)
  • i3 6100 3.7GHz
  • 8 Gb RAM
  • Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti 4Gb VRAM OC edition
  • External 240W PSU (I know, I know...)

And that's basically it. Thanks beforehand :D

Probably the PSU since Nvidia recommends a 300w psu for that card

Then again I could be wrong :)

that could be it 'cos in a PSU power calculator, the recommended power for my setup is 320w. But i hope it's something cheaper, because my pc is a MicroATX (i think it's the name) I'll need a new Mother Board, case and PSU like $170 here in Spain

Thanks for the idea BTW

You should be able to just swap out the PSU, unless your case doesn't take standard ATX PSUs.

The thing is I don’t know how to get around the external psu thing plus the fact that I’m not 100% sure that the PSU is the problem

Ahh I see what you mean now, I do apologize, I didn't see that your PC doesn't support the ATX standard. That is more complicated for sure, especially as there may be proprietary connectors for the motherboard and/or PSU itself... I am not familiar with them so can't help you in that regard. Might be an idea to post a topic in the PSU forum, and link here too if you like instead of going through the motions again.... be sure to tell them in the OP about it being an alienware and external PSU, and ask what your options are, there are some very knowledgeable people on here. Again, sorry for the confusion, it was my fault for not noticing you mentioned external PSU, really it's a SFF PSU BTW I believe, it's just a minimal connections tiny PSU, with an out-of-case power brick IIRC. You can find those for sure as I have looked for them before, but BUT, because of the case maybe being a proprietary shape etc, another PSU may not fit correctly, which is why it's best to ask someone in the PSU section specifically if there are replacements for that model alienware.
