Sounds like a fan is scraping up against the enclosure and the lack of airflow is causing an overheat.

 

Is it blower style? Multiple fans?

Given that severe a dip in performance you should be able to see any kind of damage. Also, try putting your finger on each fan hub to find out which it is (unless you know, then just order a replacement online)

Did you try removing the GPU and spinning the fan with your finger? See if somethings lose or if it's just grinding in general?
