My Friends PC problem

renchy_is_sketchy

So my friend has the same gpu as me which is a 750ti , he has an athlon x4 880k quad core 4.0 ghz (4.2 boost right) , and hes telling me that hes getting really bad frames in a game called rust like 20-40 on low , meanwhile i have the same gpu but an xeon e5 1607 v2 at 3ghz ( which is worse then his cpu?!) but i get 70fps on decent settings. Why is that? And hes also saying that to open chrome it takes like 1 minute i already guessed that it was his hdd because hes got everything on the same drive but im not sure thats why im asking proffesionals. Thank you! (sorry for bad english)

He probably should check his drivers and directx. Both processors are similar.

you do that from device manager right? but directx ?

Google directx redist and install it.

And about drivers - no, download them from manufacturer's website.

your CPU is alot better than his CPU btw

and also are you both playing on the same resolution ?

okay well that's the difference, higher resolution results in a lower FPS and not to mention his CPU is also probably bottlenecking.

You are playing at a lower resolution (1650x1050), with a better CPU (E5 1607 V2)

Your friend's CPU (athlon x4 880k) is also well below the minimum CPU requirements (Intel Core i7-3770 / AMD FX-9590)

so what upgrade path does he have with his FM2+ socket?

Fuck all

His choices are - get a new motherboard CPU and maybe RAM, or stick with that.

Yeah, that should work fine.

and for the cpu would an i5-3330 work fine or is it trash?

Yeah, that should work nicely too.

I just realised that the xeon I recommended didn't have hyperthreading, so not as good of a pick as I thought (doesn't make it bad - just makes it basically an i5, instead of an i7)

Wow, 35% difference. I think it depends on test of course.

https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel%2BXeon%2BE5-1607%2Bv2%2B%40%2B3.00GHz&id=2192

https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD%2BAthlon%2BX4%2B880K&id=2747

Here is only 11% difference.

And AMD has even higher score in single thread rating.

And still - it's all just tests.

IMO this processor paired with graphics card it should work similar in both cases.

I think best is to find youtube tests in games - I found few and it looks pretty good (as for this processor).

So upgrade is nice, but I would focus on existing hardware first.

@homeap5

you seem to be forgetting how horrible the Bulldozer architecture is, an FX 8350 scores the same as an i7 in tests but it sure as hell doesn't even come close to it in real world scenarios.

and yes i know the 880K isn't Bulldozer architecture, but let's be real here... it's been all the same crap since 2011... they didn't improve anything, they just kept refreshing it and calling it different names.

Hey, come on, I know that AMD is better mostly in theory or in synthetic tests, but I show you how it works in youtube video. And it works with 750Ti, so the same card. So it should works better.

i know that the CPU can game, i owned an A8-6600K with an R9-280 for about 4 years :D it's basically the same CPU, but i just have deep hate for AMD's bulldozer crap, it might do fine in other games but it will struggle with unoptimized games like Rust while Intel will handle it much better, so it's kinda frustrating.

thankfully they redeemed themselves with Ryzen, but i'll always piss on Bulldozer.

honestly it's not worth it for him to upgrade unless he changes his whole system, he'll just have to find more optimized games for the time being.
