For a gaming pc do are they worth extra $100 should i just go i5 or i7?

i5 for gaming. Hyper-threading doesn't benefit that much and sometimes is worse. However there are outcasts which do use hyper-threading but overall i'd stay with the i5

I7 is never worse when you unpark threads on Windows 7 or use Windows 8.1

That said, it is only really better on 8 thread games. Planetside 2 and BF4 are about it for 8 thread games. Is it needed? Hell no. My I7 could play 4 Planetside 2's.

The I5 matches a 8350 in 8 thread games and blows it away in non 8 thread games that are cpu bound. Grab the I5 and more GPU power for GAMING. I7 if you want to render, or if you really want to stream your gameplay.

Here is I5 in a 8 thread and up game. With a overclock? It can do just as well as a 4770k at stock and match a 5ghz AMD 9xxx, while using half the power. With more optimization (Mantle) you won't even need an overclock, and you really only need a overclock atm if you have a 780ti or r290x or play a really cpu/fpu intensive game like an MMO. Those games are all 4 cores and hyperthreading does nothing for you there. I might gain 1fps in Guildwars 2 with HT and that is because they offload sound to another thread. Nothing to write home about. :)

yup, 3570k @ 3.5 and higher is really good value.  and latest models hit crazy clocks so yea... even better deal than haswell when overclocked

I would go with the i5 as games don't really benefit with hyperthreading. Hyperthreading is only useful if you are doing video editing. If you are not overclocking, I would go with a 4670 with any H87 motherboard that has the features that you like.

Yeah you can but if you aren't overclocking I would just save some money in getting better parts.

Even an i3 is capable of running Battlefield 4 at 1080p, ultra setting, 60 FPS.

an i3 has hyper threading......

might overclock in the future

If you want to overclock, get a 4670K and an Asus Z87-A/Gigabyte Z87 UD3H / MSI Z87 GD65 Gaming.

Go with a i5 and use that extra $100 on a better GPU as well as a Hyper 212 to overclock the CPU. It will benefit fit you more over the long run UNLESS you start doing extremely CPU heavy task.

Its not a bad board and should be able to overclock your cpu to 4.2ghz.

would that cooler go to 4.2

It depends on the chip that you will get as each chip is different and will have different overclocking results but I think it should be able to reach 4.2ghz on the Hyper 212 Evo.
