Hi guys,

As you all probably know by now I'm planning on buying a custom built PC with the chosen PC components in my sig (see link in my sig). However several people on here have suggested that I save some money and build the system myself. This is a rather scary thought for me because I don't want to stuff anything up or do something wrong. I know Linus and many other famous YouTubers have building guide tutorials, but even so they can't prevent mistakes made during assembly that I may make (not that I plan to, stuff happens).

What advice or help can any of you give to a novice system builder? Also, as far as cable management is concerned, what are the best cable ties to use for tying up cables in a system build?

The thought of doing this rather scares me, I'm no stranger in installing computer components, it's just the thought of stuffing up, so to speak, in the process of building. Also would I need an Anti-Static Wrist Strap and an Anti-Static Mat of some kind to do this build on?

And one very last thing, would I need to do testing on RAM and stuff? If so, what programs are generally used to do these tests?

Thanks in advance for your help guys.

the easy start

dont do it on carpet

dont force anything

read the manual or ask someone if you get stuck

plan out how everything fits and what goes it first eg: dont put the graphics card in first and cables over the top of everything

and test it all before putting it in the case (nothing worse than pulling it apart again)

Zip ties are fine for cable manage, they will come with the case you buy, you can use an anti static wrist strap but it's not really needed, just touch something metal like your case and don't build on carpet, Prime95 is a good free program for stress testing, good luck with the build mate.

CPU: FX-6300 @ 4.4 ghz GPU: MSI 7950 Motherboard: Asrock 970 Extreme R2  RAM: Teamgroup Elite Black 8GB 1600mhz

Case: Corsair 300r Windowed Storage: 60GB Corsair SSD boot, 1TB WD Black storage PSU: Corsair GS600 Displays: AOC 22", Acer 24" both 1920x1080 60hz

I would very much recommend watching linus's ultimate build guides and various other youtubers.

Building a pc is pretty easy, don't be afraid.

You will usually get all the cable ties you need with your computer parts.

Things like twist ties, that a lot of your hard ware will come with is good for bunching up cables. Zip ties are good as well and you may get some with your psu.

You don't need an anti static wrist strap really touching anything that is metal will do, such as your case.

You can run things like memtest and prime 95, but you will most likely find out if any parts are faulty by just gaming.

Okay, thanks for that. I know about touching the metal case but wasn't sure if that was adequate enough. Thanks for your help.

Hey Geekazoid i live 2 hours north up the M1 in Newcastle and if you ever need any help im only a instant message away. If i i lived closer i would teach you how to build it.

  my big tips are

1. DO NOT PANIC

2. Take your time

3. DO NOT FREAK OUT

4. Quadruple check everything and there is only 1 way ram, cpu, gpu can possibly go.

5. DO NOT STRESS

6. Watch videos or call someone or instant message someone while you doing it.

You will be fine. plus you have the LTT Forum members guiding you.

Touching your case before hand and like many said stay off carpet.

maybe have just a fan on near as if its a hot day and you stress you will sweat alot which means moisture

\

Hmm, yes I know about touching the case, it seems as though that would be adequate but I might end up getting an Anti-Static Wrist Strap just to be on the safe side (overly cautious, yes I know).

Good point about the fan, it'd be a bugger if I dripped sweat onto the motherboard or something else.

It's not necessary to use an ant-static wrist strap or mat but some people just prefer it because it gives them piece of mind. Also I don't know if any websites do this that deliver to Australia but if you order your parts from Scan in the UK you can pay £25 for insurance in case you mess up and break something.

Hmm, okay. I do like piece of mind :). Thanks for the suggestion but I may just stick with Aussie stores.

Well guys despite your overwhelming generous help, I've decided to stick with the decision to have the PC built for me. It's just that I'd rather let those who know what they're doing build it for me, plus they can test it also and I just get the assembled and tested system delivered to me :). Maybe next time.
