So we have this new Shaw XB6 router with only 2 Ethernet ports.

we used a gigabit switch to extend the number of available ports to 5 (1 connected to the router, 3 in use, 1 free)

With this new router, my siblings have experienced disconnection in games such as Fortnite and League of Legends but smooth online web usage.

Are such internet problems to be expected when using a switch?

what brand/model of switch are you using. there should be no issue hanging a switch off of a router.

This one

No, a switch should work fine.

Are you sure it is a switch and not a router that you use? Because if so, two DHCP servers in one network may give stability problems.

What do you mean 2 DHCP server?

we have 3 computers connected to the gigabit switch, i'm assuming they are automatically obtaining their IP from the router

set ping google.com -t and watch for dropping packets

I actually did not know how to stop the command, because i think the -t made it so it pings google forever.

did a bit of googling and i was able to find the stop command.

anyways

at first, i did assume that the problem was caused by packet loss, but as we can see, none was lost

I also noticed that the ping is higher than when using our previous router bu only about 20ms

So you are just using the integral switch on your router, this should be fine. This means you have 1 device with multiple items plugged into it right? The item posted is a cable modem + router + 4 port gigabit switch all in one. If you are also using another cable modem - you done messed up.

If you are experiencing dropouts on wired connections then give Shaw a call and have them troubleshoot.

I'm not thinking this is an issue with the ethernet switch, more likely something off with your cable network connection.

You can log into 192.168.100.1, go to status, and take a screenshot of the page with all the stats so we can see what your cable modem signal is looking like.

from what I can see, its just 2 devices. The switch and the XB6 Modem

(5 port gigabit switch actually, only 1 port isn't being used)

What is the make and model of this 5 port switch?

edit: If you have items off both the modem and the switch its this that is most likely causing the issues.

Grab an 8 port or 16 port switch and hang all of your devices off of the switch, that way each device can talk to each other at 1gbps and not be limited by the 1gb uplink from modem to switch unless going to the internet which is much less than 1gbps.

D-Link DGS-1008G and DGS-1016A are good switches and support qos. Getting a cheap gigabit switch isn't a great idea when something that is known to work well like the dgs-1008g is only $25

This is the exact model http://www.trendnet.com/products/proddetail?prod=595_TEG-S5g#tabs-solution01

I have reports from my siblings that they are also disconnecting when playing, but steady connections when on the web

Remember how I said the XB6 Modem has 2 Ethernet ports? the other port is being used by my older brother and he said he is also receiving the unfortunate disconnects.

This makes me believe that the problem is my ISP's side

My older brother told me its probably packet loss, if so, how would we deal with this?

But with my previous test, there was no packet loss so what could it be?

I'll see if I could get a different switch and observe any changes

Could be bad signal to the modem.

I forgot to mention that we have a WiFi extender, but i doubt that causes the random disconnects

Its got a router inside, IP is different. Try 10.0.0.1 (default is admin/password)

Also, set up a constant ping to 10.0.0.1 and another window with a ping to 8.8.8.8 and go about your business, when the dropouts start happening check that ping to see which of them is having issues.

sorry for not responding in such a long time, I factory reset the modem and it seems like it's fixed the problem.

however, it appears the problem is starting to come back

I will do what you've requested once the problem is confirmed back

Also, how would i keep  a constant ping to 10.0.0.1 and 8.8.8.8?

is there a specific setting in the router for this?

Ping -t 8.8.8.8

the -t makes it go untill you kill it with crt+x (or c I forget)

This should absolutely not cause any issues as the modem (actually a router, very dumb of them to call it a WiFi modem) simply has a built-in switch, so you are simply connecting one switch to another, which is a perfectly normal setup.  It doesn't matter which port you use in either device, its functionally the same.

 @schizzlschnitzl @Alex Atkin UK @The Benjamins @Bigman397

could this also be a bandwidth problem?

I notice that the rate in which i disconnect from gaming is higher when a lot of people are using the internet (my 2 brothers and other fam members watching Netflix)

Or this could just be coincidence

Sound more like a router/internet issue. a QOS router would help

Your ping results also appear to show you pinging IPV6. It's possible your ISP is doing some sort of 6to4 functionality this could be causing your issues. I would disable ipv6 in windows and see if it improves performance.

How would i go about disabling ipv6?

I haven't tried this yet, everything else seem to temporarily fix the problem but not permanently

I would disable it on a single PC and see if that improves things, Click Here for instructions

Nothing worked so far.

8.8.8.8 gives 1 lost packet of 500+ test

10.0.0.1 gives no packet loss or ping spikes
