Hitting 90c on a 6700k with a noctua nhd-15s

ebsikl

Specs are

i7 6700k

asus z170-E

EVGA GTX 1080 ssc

16 gb corsair vengance ddr4 3000mhz

corsair rm650x

Fractal Design Define r6

I'm hitting 90c at load, and 50-60 at idle. My cpu temps have been spazzing out, jumping around like crazy. Some of the cores were at 35, while the package was at 90. I'm running an NH d-15s on a 6700k, all stock except for xmp enabled. I've tried re-applying thermal paste multiple times, but still it's been having issues. Anyone know what it could be?

I was having temperature issues from the start, got the nh d-15s about a week ago, but I was having issues beforehand with an h115i too. I just moved the pc to an r6 from an s340 elite, expecting it to be better, but it seems to have gotten worse. Before I had 2x ml140s in the s340, but now I've got the 2 stock fans in.

what were your temperatures on the h115i?

Around 40 at idle, and jumping around like crazy too. Peak was 80 with it.

well i would guess that you installed both coolers wrong, by either not applying enough thermal paste, or you used the wrong screws so there's spacing between the cooler and the CPU, or just straight up not tight enough.

also did you make sure that your voltages are correct? and not insanely high?
could also be a faulty temperature sensor

Take off/open the front panel of your case and remove the side panel of your case.

Skylake also has poor TIM under the IHS. Liquid Metal would likely drop 15-20C but it's probably not worth it for that CPU.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Low mounting pressure of the cooler probably.

Rarely, bad TIM application under the CPU's lid by Intel. Good RMA reason there.

i can only guess you applied the cooler wrong. try reseating the cooler, turning the screws slowly corner by corner, until you cant turn them by hand anymore

I have a 6700k and a Dark Rock TF.

When I run AIDA64 stress test on CPU, FPU, and cache it hits 72C.

Do you have a custom fan curve set for your CPU cooler fans?

You could get these results with an incorrect fan curve.
