Attempt for converting an HP PC into a gaming pc

Hi everyone, sorry for the long post, but plaese help:

i got a hold of an HP EliteDesk 800 G2 Tower PC (Form Factor: Microtower)
and while the CPU (i7-6700) is Great (i think), there is no GPU inside,

the memory is only 4G (i guess DDR4-2133 SDRAM, need to verify)

and worst of all - the PSU is only 280W.

a lot of study tought me that i can't replace this PSU because it is unique and has special connections with the motherboard.

obviously - this PC was not intented to serve as a gaming rig,

yet i found that a 1050ti requires 300w
and when i googled for this problem - most of the opinions says that this card will work even on a 250w PSU.

now i tried to cut as much as i could on the wattage consumption,

i took out the HDD and installed SSD, i'm planning to disconnect the DVDRW as well.

as of now i temporarily installed a crappy GeForce GT 610

anyway, i am aiming at the 1050ti, wondering about the 1060..

and wanted to get more opinions about what i can and cannot do,

what is a good investment and what will creat a bottleneck,

do i need to upgrade my system memory? i found out that the motherboard Memory: "Transfer rates up to 2133 MT/s"

am i limited to a small form factor GPU or not?

can i add an external PSU only for the gpu?

thanks

i am addind a few pics for additional information.

upgrade the PSU to 500 Watts, get a 3x4GB kit of DDR4, and youll be set.

How to upgrade the PSU?

i already googled for this option, and as i wrote (above): a lot of study tought me that i can't replace this PSU because it is unique and has special connections with the motherboard

sounds easy except for the part where you'd need to mod the hell out of any standard power supply to make it work on that thing

main needs +12 and -12, that's doable

there seems to be a single +12 wire coming out of the mobo and going into the power connectors for the drives

CPU 4 pin might not be +12 due to its color, I'd measure it first before doing anything

there's no PS_ON wire or at least it's not visible, if the CPU has SB then that'd be a huge problem

ASUS X470-PRO • R7 1700 4GHz • Corsair H110i GT P/P • 2x MSI RX 480 8G • Corsair DP 2x8 @3466 • EVGA 750 G2 • Corsair 730T • Crucial MX500 250GB • WD 4TB

a 1050ti and i7 6700 won't eat that much power, your PSU is more than capable of powering it. BTW, the gt 610 is a big performance decrease from the iGPU. just get the 1050ti and another 4-8gb of ram ans you'll be fine.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Heatsink: Gelid Phantom Black GPU: Palit RTX 3060 Ti Dual RAM: Corsair DDR4 2x8GB 3000Mhz mobo: Asus X570-P case: Fractal Design Define C PSU: Superflower Leadex Gold 650W

thanks,

can i gamble on the 1060 to run with this PSU..?

i found out that this CPU can even run along with 1070 as well..

am i limited to a small form factor GPU or not?

is the memory speed not too slow..?

No.

Based on the photo, yes, by GPU length. But almost all, if not all single fan 1050 Ti will fit in there.

It's slow, but not too slow to be worried about. What you should worry about is that you're running a Single Channel Memory which affects performance.

Thank you all guys..

i'll try to fetch GPU and memory from second hand.

their price (new) is almost half of a new PC

  • 4 years later...

Just bought a used same tower G2 i7 6700 but with 8GB and I bought a used Corsair vengeance LPX 8GB (2x4gb) ddr4 DRAM 2666 C16.

Just would like to ask as I no nuts about computers and learning as it goes. I'm a rather hands on person.

Can I just insert n mix the 2x corsair ram with the existing ram which is hynix hma81gu6afr8n-uh 8GB 2400 to make it 16gb?

As I try reading from some forums as can be mix but com will use the lowest frequency.

You can try it but you may run into the sticks themselves being incompatable to the other per pair.

It's all about the IC's in the sticks.....

Some work fine with other IC types/ some don't and that's the main gist of what you may run into.
Must also point out Corsair (Historically speaking) could change the IC's used in a model line, even if it's the same version/revision of that line by the numbers.

I've seen for example with Corsair sets I own, the same identical sticks with the same version/revision and all else have two different IC sets used in them.
Lucky for me these are compatable with each other "As Is" but that's not always the case and no guarantee yours would be.

If your sets don't work, best suggestion would be to grab two sets new at the same time from the same vendor and be done with it for the absolute best chance of it all wanting to work right as you intend and I'd also think about another brand too, G.Skill being a reputable make that doesn't have this known history of IC changes mid-production.
Good luck.
