Hello all!

Today I recovered an HDD from an old decoder (mostly just to try it out). After some fooling around with is I maneged to get it working. But now I see in disk maneger that it is "simple volume" and not "primairy partition".

I did some looking around but can't seem to find what it means and if it mathers.

Anyone that can help me?

Thanks in advance!

Greets from a young guy that is learing everyday!

Hello 42thgamer,

Change simple volume to primary by converting dynamic disk to basic, use the following DISKPART commands:

Step 1 :- Open CMD and type diskpart to open the diskpart console.

Step 2 :-  Then list disk and press enter.
Step 3 :- Type select disk 1 (Or the right corresponding number) and press enter.
Step 4:- Type delete volume 0 and press enter. This command is used to delete the volume.
Step 5:- Repeat steps 3 and 4 for each volume  listed. In this ways delete all the volume which are in the list.
Step 6 :- after done step 5 then type select disk 1 and hit enter.
Step 7 :- type convert basic

Simple volume, is a dynamic storage which functions like a primary partition in Windows NT 4.0 and its older versions, can only be created on a dynamic disk.

Primary partition, is a partition which can be used to boot an Operating System, can only be created on a basic disk with MBR or GPT partition table under all Windows systems.

And is there a reason for changing it?

If you want to use the drive for boot purposes then yes. But if it works ok with your standards then avoid the hassle...
