GPU Power Consumption

Hi, I just want to ask if my assumption is correct.

I currently have a GTX 1060 3Gb and I want to upgrade to a 1070/Ti. The only problem I'm having is the power consumption.

What if I used the 1070 on the very same task as my 1060 does, will it consume the same as my 1060? or much higher? Since the TDP of 1060 is just 120w while the TDP of 1070 is 180w.

For example. I am playing a game @ 1080p with 60fps lock. Does both cards consume the same power while running that game?

I understand the concept of higher performance = higher power consumption. But what if its the same very task? I saw a 1070 being sold @ around 250usd and 1070tis for 280-300 (converted from my currency).

I can't really find a particular thread answering my query. Hope people here can enlighten me. Thanks! :)

the point of buying a gtx 1070 not only to increase the max fps but also the graphic quality.

power = performance

since its essentially the same engine under the hood, i would say if you lock in 60fps it would consume roughly the same power (without the overhead).

TDP measures the max power output.

Power supply related? Just buy a new one with higher power output.

A bit like this

Spoiler

1070ti under low loads draw more power than the 1060 because it has more things to power, even when you only need little performance from it.

As amount of work goes up and 1060 goes past its efficiency peak (yet not under full load) but 1070ti doesnt, 1070ti draws less power than the 1060

Depends on how much of the 1060 and 1070ti does the game use in that state.

definitely get the 1070ti. Much better deal.

If it's the exact same load, then no, it won't draw more power.

I'm not really into the increase my fps in games. My main problem here is if I upgrade to a 1070, does it reflect to my electricity bill even if I'm using the card on the same workload as my 1060? I don't know but I have this urge to upgrade even its not needed (I know I'm not the only one here). Currently I can play the game I want with my 1060 (Dota 2) and I'm aware that upgrade is not really necessary but I can't help it since GPU prices have gone down.

And since it won't really affect my electric bill. I think I can do my unnecessary upgrade then. Thanks for the help! :)

Yeah, a 1060 is DEFINITELY enough for Dota 2.

If you're happy with your current level of performance (which you are), just keep your current setup, and upgrade when you feel like you really need to.

wait till 2070 arrive and the price will drop even lower.

Dota2 doesn't need 1070 power, its relatively a light game.

It does most of the workload in cpu not gpu.

get a 1070 if you're into action / fps stuff.

its a waste for strategy games.
