I'm about 2 weeks from ordering the parts for my first gaming PC. I'm going with a GTX 1080 and I can't decide between an i5 8600k or an i7 8700k. I'm going to be playing mainly esports titles in 1080p and I'm trying to get the most FPS. I'll be doing some minor streaming and editing but it's not the main purpose of this build. Is it worth the extra $100 to get the i7? Or would the i5 be enough?

Well if you are dead set on Intel and you want to play and stream, then you should get the i7 and at least 16GB of RAM.

8700K hands down. It'll last you much longer, and is definitely worth it.

Yah, if you were just  doing gaming, especially esports gaming, i would just go i5. But even if the amount of streaming you do is minimal, you will notice a difference with the i7. The extra 100 is a great value, and lots of future proof value as well.

i5 for just gaming, i7 for gaming+streaming. You need the extra cores for encoding.

Over 8 cores is overkill for streaming, over 4 cores is overkill for gaming. 4.3ghz stock is where it's at in current gen.

From there, just find what suits your wallet.

My rig:

CPU: Ryzen 7 5800x

MB: Gigabyte B450 I Aorus Pro WiFi

RAM: Kingston Fury Beast RGB 32GB (2x16GB) 3600mhz CL16 (1-to-1 Infinity Fabric enabled)

GPU: Gigabyte RTX 2080 Super

*bought for $200 CAD off a friend who needed an RTX 3080, price was my reward.

CASE: InWinn A1 Plus in White with included 600w gold sfx PSU and included custom length cables

DISPLAY: 3x 20" AOC 1080p 60hz 4ms ,  32" RCA 1080p/60hz TV mounted above, all on a single arm.

Storage: C : 1TB WD Blue NVMe      D : 2TB Barracuda      E: 240GB Kingston V300 (scratch drive)

NAS: 240GB Kingston A400 + 6x 10+ year old 700GB Barracuda drives in my old FX8350+8GB DDR3 system

Logitech G15 1st Gen + Logitech G602 Wireless

Over 4 cores isn't overkill for gaming, since people rarely make sure their game is the only thing the CPU needs to worry about. 6 core i5 was a great move because quad core CPUs were struggling to keep up.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.
