Dual ethernet ports for split usage?

akb8812

So, I'm upgrading my Plex server / Living room gaming PC with used parts. 6700k, H270M-ITX (yes, I know no OC and RAM runs at 2133) which has dual LAN ports. I have 1Gbps symmetrical but just using regular consumer switches that don't support Link Aggregation so I'm not using two cables for double the speed.

I am however wondering if I could hook up both ports and utilze one for just file transfers through the network, I have the Plex drive as a shared network folder, and then the other one for regular WIndows and gaming network usage?

So one port to handle traffic from the shared network drive and Plex folders and then the other one for regular usage.

It really won't help you for this. Since nothing else can handle the extra speed, it won't make a difference. Also you really want teaming here, and your switch doesn't support it.

I'm not looking for any extra speed. Just to have the two different traffic seperated. I'm hoping it would help with data transfers while gaming or doing something else network intensive.

separting the traffic really won't help you. Is there a problem that your having with the system?

Well not really. It's an i5 haswell system that I'm upgrading, since it was starting to show it's age a bit especially with games and Plex streaming at times.

Network wise it has been alright, but since this motherboard does have the two LAN ports I'm wondering if this doable, wether or not I'll see any gains from it.

So here is what I'm hoping to do. Also just for the geekines of it.

Have the network share and the Plex server on a static IP on one of the ports and then just a standard DHCP on the other port for the rest of the stuff.

you can do that, it just won't help you at all. Your just adding points of failure complication with no benfit, but give it a shot.
