Hello i'm a fairly new pc enthusiast here and want to ask your advice for upgrading my cpu, ram and motherboard. I currently have Amd-fx 6300,8 gb of ddr3 memory and gtx 1060.

I'm happy with my gpu's performance but the fx-6300 is bottlenecking it in some games. I'm looking currently at Ryzen 5 2600 and I5 8400 and the Ryzen have seem a better option for me because of the 12 threads and lower cpu usage. My problem really is that i don't really want to spend that much money and i'm currently thinking about buying a mobo with 2 ram slots (because of the cheaper price) and one 8 gb stick of 2666mhz ram (planning to upgrade to 16gb). I'm aware of the decrease in performance with single-channel memory but i'm okay with it because i plan to upgrade it to 16 gb in a month or two. The insecure part is that is it okay to buy another stick of 8gb ram? (same model etc.) Have read that some people advise not to and some say it's okay. The pc is really just for gaming in 60fps (currently using it on a tv). So i would like to ask you my fellow comrades what you think about the situation and i am open to suggestions. Mainly looking for getting all out of my gpu for 60fps. Thank you and sorry if i had any any typos, english isn't my native language :)

I am no expert, but if you are buying that exact same model of ram, it should be perfectly fine

AFAIK, there is no issue runing mismatch ram, just don't expect to overclock it. All DDR4 can run in JEDEC, and capability issue are very very rare nowadays.

Ram support mainly depends on the MB now, so if the ram you bought is on the supported list for your MB, you should be fine.

I'd go for an i5 8400 tbh, I would not want to OC on a very cheap motherboard. and the 8400 is a kinda lower power part. :) and a bit better for gaming.

Thanks for your opinion ! :) I'm thinking about: MSI B450M Pro-M2, it costs 80 euros here, and i'm not planning to oc the cpu if i'm happy with the performance. The concern with the i5 8400 is really high cpu usage (90-100%) in games like ac origins and watch dogs 2, so i'm worried that it won't have sufficient performance for 60fps in a year or two. Of course it's only a speculation.

What is your mobo options may i ask entirely? MSI is known for .. cheaping out on components

If the i5 8400 is keeping down performance in those games (and those are poorly coded titles), then so will the Zen 2600. The 2600 is not a magical leap over the 8400. However, I had mine at 4.2 when I ran it so you have a decent amount of OC'ing headroom with it, that should say a bit. Its IPC is worse than the Intel's, though. Significantly.

Mainly: ASRock B450M-HDV, Gigabyte B450M DS3H and Asus PRIME B450M-K. The MSI one is 10 euros cheaper though.

Yes i know that i'm purely speculating that games in the future will use more threads and that the ryzen would be more "future proof". The performance difference isn't that significant for me because i only need 60 fps. I just mean that like in ac origins from what i have seen the i5 does average 90fps and the ryzen does 80 fps, but the usage is on the i5 100% and on the Ryzen like 70-80%. So in theory the Ryzen should still have "potential" still there.

Thanks guys ! I haven't yet ordered anything so do you think that 2666mhz ram is fine for the Ryzen 5 2600?

if 50dollars more isn't much of an issue, get some cl14 3200 or 3600 b-die from gskill

So i decided to check what it would cost for i5 8400 and i got:

I5 8400: 185e

Gigabyte B360M DSH3: 83e

Kingston 8GB (1x8GB) Hyper X Fury, DDR4 2666MHz, CL16 98e

=366e

And on the amd side: (the motherboards that i mentioned earlier aren't an option more because i forgot the check how many fan headers they have and they only have 1, i need 2)

Ryzen 5 2600: 173e

MSI B450M Gaming Plus: 95e

And the same ram stick as above for

=366e :D

My budget kinda was 350e but it's proven to be really difficult to keep it under that...

If you guys have any suggestions, opinions or thoughts i would be very excited to hear them! :) I don't know what to do anymore...

It is, but B-die memory work very well with Ryzen. One of the reasons why people prefer it.

I'm not really thrilled to use that much money on memory right now... I just keep thinking about the days when i could buy a basic set of 1600mhz ram for 50 euros, and didn't think about it. Now ram seems to more of a difference maker in gaming. Especially with Ryzen.

The big names in the RAM market have been price fixing lately so that is affecting the prices at large, you could save from RAM a little, but I wouldn't buy a cheap board. The CPU could be OC'ed and you should make use of that. Make sure to buy a board with decent VRMs + cooling.

Sorry for asking but which board would you choose from here for about 100e max ?
