So I have an i7-8700k and I tried to install it but when I start my pc, it just starts up for a split second then turns off, I put in an i5-7600k and it worked just fine, but I know for a fact the CPU itself is not broken. What could be the issue? Do I not have a strong enough power supply? I have a 500W.

Also, without overclocking, will a Hyper 212 Evo support an i7-8700k? I will be streaming and playing games.

but does your motherboard support the 8700k?

most z170 mobos need a compatibility BIOS update to use the 7th gen CPU.

All I know is that I have the same socket, LGA1151 for both motherboards, are you saying I need a BIOS update? Because that's what I'm suspecting

You don't put an 8th gen Coffee Lake CPU on a board like b250 or z270 for 7th gen Kaby Lake CPUs. They're not compatible.

Ryzen 5 1600 @ 3.9 Ghz  | Gigabyte AB350M Gaming 3 |  PaliT GTX 1050Ti  |  8gb Kingston HyperX Fury @ 2933 Mhz  |  Corsair CX550m  |  1 TB WD Blue HDD

Inside some old case I found lying around.

nope, i edited the comment, you'll need a new motherboard.

8th gen CPU do not function in 6/7th gen motherboards.

No, you need a b360 or z370 board for coffee lake.

for the 8700k? are you kidding me?

no don't do it, weak VRM's with no heatsink.. they would probably overheat and blow up.

just get a good 100$+ B360 board or 160$+ Z370 board.

yes, but your 8700k will not overclock, you'll be tied to 2666MHz RAM tops and only two RAM slot..

if you have to, it'll work in pinch, but seeing as you already have a working system, gather the parts with purpose and then go all-carnage.

it just seems like you are unwilling to spend on a motherboard, can you still return the 8700k? otherwise the cheapest decent z370 is like 150usd. you could always just grab a 8700 with one of the cheaper motherboards instead.

I am unwilling to spend, I already dropped a shit ton on a second monitor and the processor, I'm just thinking return it and build a whole new system, the whole thing is ass anyways.

You need to get a Z370 motherboard for that CPU.

Doesn't matter if the socket number is the same.

Also, why would you buy an 8700K when the 9700K/9900K are about to be released?
