With the Steam Winter Sale, I've been downloading my fair share of games. However, there is a problem with the connection to the Steam Servers.

The connection to the servers stays at a regular 700-900 KB/s most of the time (that is my line speed). However, every minute, the speed dips to zero, and subsequently returns to normal after 10 seconds.

Does anyone know what's happening to Steam?

Oh, and It's not the line, Speedtest.net reports back normally, and torrents never dip substantially. Normal downloads also aren't affected by this problem.

I wouldn't be surprised, considering how many people are downloading new games. You can try switching download servers in the settings and see if it helps.

i have the same problem, might just be steam

Yeah, I've even tried changing the download server from Manchester to London. It makes no difference.

EDIT:  @T.Vengeance

Tried that, to no avail :(

Steam is getting hammered big time now, because of the last day of Winter Sale.

By the way, those internet speeds are horrendous (sorry for noticing :P)

Yeah, That's ADSL for you. It's the best connection my area has at the moment. However, my ping is only 16ms (lowest 11).

In 3 months, my area is getting 76 Megabit Fibre, so that'll be good :)
