Ryzen 5 1600 OC

Greetings,

I'd like to try overclocking my Ryzen 5 1600. I had chosen a cooler I wanted to buy. I was however not sure whether the Acutake SilverTherm I have since the last time I've messed with my brother's PC is good enough, or I should buy better thermal paste, so I've posted a thread in a local PC related Facebook group. Unfortunately, this raised more questions than it answered. Initially, I thought the cooler will be good enough since the CPU has a TDP of 65 Watts, usually doesn't go above 4 GHz and I've even seen guy overclocking it on the stock cooler. However, half the people who replied have told me that the cooler won't be sufficient, while the other half says it will (some of them even have the same cooler I want to buy since this brand is pretty popular in this region). I don't know who to believe...

that CPU is more than fine. people have done 3,9 ghz on the stock cooler. that tower cooler should easily allow for a 3,9 to 4 ghz overclock depending on mobo and silicon lottery

I have problems on 3.9 and 4GHz (Windows Bluescreens). I would recommend to use 3.8GHz on 1.375v

What kind of garbage chip did you get? Mine does 3.8 on 1.28v

Mine uses on 3.2GHz already 1.21v

Some R5 1600 are just not able to overclock very high. I built two identical gaming rigs for friends of mine, both with a Ryzen 5 1600. One is able to go to 3.9Ghz at 1.28v, the other one doesnt even really do 3.8Ghz stabily unless given 1.35v.

Yes you could say between 3.7GHz and 3.9GHz (depends on the voltage).

But I would recommend to try the Ryzen Master Application to get stable overclocking settings and after that you can change the settings in your bios.

Ohh and I can have a max voltage of 1.72 which is very high

I've tried running Cinebench and measured the CPU through Ryzen Master. It boosted to 3,4 GHz, drained about 1,23 V and got to 60°C.

I've placed an order for that cooler I've talked about, so I should have it by tomorrow.

What do you think about that thermal paste? Should I get something better, or just use what I have?

I used the default one and I'm around 40°c on idle. Not perfect but it doesn't go over 70°c. If you see any high temperatures than you should change the thermal paste.

Here comes the test results: You are a horrible perso... I mean... 

I've managed to overclock it to 3,875 GHz at 1,4V. At first, 3,9 GHz seemed to be stable, it managed to do the render in Cinebench with no issues but crashed after six minutes of Asus RealBench stress test. I've bought that cooler I've been talking about. After about 10 minutes in the test, the temperatures have stabilized at 68-70°C and haven't increased further. I'll try to lower the voltage a bit tomorrow.
