Huawei P20 or Samsung Galaxy S8?

Dylanc431

Hey all,

I'm currently in the market for a new phone on contract and I don't have too many choices, after whittling down some phones I 100% don't want like the Galaxy A series and the Huawei Y series, I'm down to 2 contenders:

The Huawei P20, which came out earlier this year.
or
The Samsung Galaxy S8.

Now, I'm really not a fan of touchWiz and I'm very much an android purist.

The S8 seems to have the better screen packing OLED and a higher resolution, but the fingerprint scanner is in a really terrible spot, the iris scanner is patchy at best and the face unlock plain doesn't work. The P20 has that AI "powered" camera, along with the Leica lenses, though the lack of a 3.5mm jack is a bugbear (they at least give you an adapter). I prefer the look of the S8 but the Huawei is probably the better phone for feel as I don't really like the curvy smooth feel of the Samsung (it feels almost slippery). Has Samsung improved Bixby enough to justify it? Can EMUI be customized more than TW (or, Samsung Experience (?)).

Both are the same price per month, the only reason I can consider the Samsung is because of a flash sale.

What do you recommend?

SIdenote: I do also have the option of the iPhone 7, if you want to compel me then fire ahead!

Get the A8 2018 edition.  Its a slightly better phone than the S8 so i was advised.

I have one and it knocks spots off my old Galaxy S6.

P20 hands down.

OLED vs IPS doesn’t really matter much, nor the resolution)I had the S7 with OLED before and now the P20)

The P20 Camera is muuuch better.

S9 vs P20 would be a bit more difficult, but between S8 and P20 it is easy

From who and with what Reasons?

Because Galaxy S8 > Galaxy A8 2018 by far.

Better Camera, faster SoC,more storage. USB C is 3.1 speed, instead only 2.0, Wireless Charging

A8 can do NOTHING better than the S8. Except from it beeing cheaper ^^

Well, P20 is indeed newer, but the Kirin isn't quite on par with this years flaggship SoCs like SD 845.

So it's not much faster than the Exynos from the S8.

But having IPS instead Amoled is a real bummer. I wouldn't want a Smartphone anymore at all without Oled - doesn't matter the Price.

S8 doesn't just have an Amoled / Oled screen, it's much sharper AND one of the best Displays you can find. If you're sensitive enough, you will be able to tell a small differenc between 1080p and 1440p (because Oled screens are all Pentile Matrix, missing a subpixel)

Even if you completely ignore Bixby, you don't have any disadvantage from it.

Samsung experience or Emui... YOu can customize them just like every other Android skin. I know that Samsung does have a Theme store, there's that.

Otherwise, install Nova Launcher or something ^^

What about the Oneplus 6 (soon 6t)? Should be in a similar pricerange~ i think.

Will be faster from performance than even P20 Pro and S9+.

How do you find the P20 day to day? Has it gotten many/any updates since you got it? (I'm coming from an Android One device)

Is the software very customizable? For example, I run the Pixel launcher on my current phone, could I do that on the P20?

Just had a word with a friend of mine that has a P20 and hes really pleased with it.

He did say the only downside he sees over his old Samsung is that Pictures taken in low light can sometimes seem a little grainy.  Hes had the phone over 2 months so i think hes had plenty of time to run it in.

Honestly, if that's the only downside that sounds really decent!

Bullshit ... there is almost no difference ... especially not in day to day use

the P20 IPS 1080p imho is on par with the S8/S9 pentile 1440p ...

the only thing missing is the always on clock, which I turned of on my Samsung anyway.

Battery life is much much better on the Huawei.

Well 9 didn’t arrive yet, but otherwise I would say no more or less, thn with a Samsung Device, although there isn’t even 8.1 out for the S8 yet. Samsung’s Update policy is the worst ...

I don‘t really customize my phones ...

Definitely go for an iPhone 7, you get better support if something goes wrong in an apple store, prices will go down in a few days due to the release of the new iPhones. You will also get software support for many years to come unlike all android phones.

Wut? He is Android user, you suggest him iPhone 7?

@Dylanc431 don't forget Honor 10, it's very similar to P20, but cheaper. Also, it does have 3.5mm jack, but just USB 2.0 speed if I remember right.
