CacheCade + Windows 10 = very bad performance..? Help.

As the title suggested, I has a 60GB SSD as a CacheCade drive on my Broadcom MegaRAID 9271-8iCC, trying to boost the performance of a 5-drive spinning platter RAID-6 array. It performs very badly under Windows 10. Why? How can I fix this?

Let’s just say it has become a common occurence for me to see loading screens on literally everything - have you ever seen a loading screen before you entering your password?

Is this a boot volume?

 

Also that being a consumer low end drive isn't helping.

I see the Windows loading screen plenty on a 256GB x 2 SSD RAID0.

 

But back to the question, I suspect it's slower than pure SSD's because you're cache drive is only 60GB of a lower consumer SSD. 

Your OS is nearly half of that, and files you're opening will constantly be swapping out the cache. 

 

Typically this controller is for server storage and while you may have a OS array on it, they would typically just be a mirror for redundancy, while all your storage would be on a seperate logical volume with RAID5/6/etc...OS speeds arent really a concern for servers.

The loading screen was the one after you dismissed the lock screen UI and before typing in the password.

 

That machine was a server and I am repurposing it into a workstation. I am swapping out the 60GB SSD for a 240GB one for a try. If that atill does not work I would try get a 480GB NVMe SSD (I can just splice the original Asus C602 UEFI BIOS and the NVMe UEFI driver from some Asus X299 board together to create a new BIOS that can boot from NVMe)

I'm curious why you're using caching solutions at all?

 

Ideally, you should do this:

OS Drive - SSD - directly connected to a SATA port on the motherboard (alternatively, RAID1 a pair of them, but not required for "home" usage)

Array - HDD's - no cache needed - 5x drives in RAID6 on a hardware RAID Card - formatted and used as a "secondary data" drive.

I just went NVMe, and the SATA SSD is now no longer used. Session closed.
