more cores or more threads?

im looking at the i7 8700 and the future 9700 (both non-k) for my sff build and I'm wondering if, mainly for gaming, im better off with 6c/12t or 8c/8t

what are your thoughts?

When the reviews come in, I'll be the 9700 will outperform the 8700, but you'll have to wait to be sure.

Since most games are not optimized for multi-core performance, the number of cores shouldn't matter as long as you have 4-6 cores. The 9700 will probably be faster than the 8700, although the 9700 is not the direct successor to the 8700. That would be the 9900. But I don't know if you'll notice a significant increase in gaming performance.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X | MOBO: MSI B450 Tomahawk GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6800XT | RAM: GSkill Trident Z DDR4 3600Mhz | PSU: ADATA Core Reactor 850W 80+ Gold | CASE: Fractal Design Meshify C MONITOR: LG 32UL500-W 4K 60Hz, Gigabyte M27Q 1440p 165Hz

Cores, threads only boost the efficiency of the core by 5% to 15% they can't compete with physical cores.
