Ubuntu box

Go to solution Solved by WoodenMarker,

Ok, let me reshape my question:

What is the cheapest way to get a small and quiet ubuntu box for basic tasks going?

How about an Intel NUC?

http://www.amazon.de/Intel-BOXDC3217BY-Barebone-Mini-PC-Intel-HD/dp/B0093LINT2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1388675189&sr=8-1&keywords=intel+nuc#productDetails

Just stuff some ram and a ssd in.

Greetings!

We are looking into an Ubuntu box that is relatively small and really quiet, and also shouldn't be expensive.

I have several questions/ideas...

Is there some good thin-mitx options? Is the Intel lp 1155 heatsink for thin mitx reasonably quiet? Maybe the intel NUC is good.

The box wouldn't need a mechanical HDD but rather a SSD.

Also are intel motherboards reliable?

Maybe an old mac mini might work as well?

this? http://de.pcpartpicker.com/p/2uhwK

Please give me all your thoughts and ideas.

oh god this post is horrible.

This is by no means final. I came here in search for assistance, so please tell me what would be better suited.

something like this will be enough

Are you just trying to get as small of a system as possible? I'm not sure if the case would have adequate cooling for a decent cpu.

Is there any specific use case? What would you be doing with it?

You can go more low end and use Xubuntu or Kubuntu

Nothing more than Ubuntu with web, office and similar applications. Would be more of a thing to play around with.

If you're looking for silence you should definitely not go with the stock cooler.

I know, I was looking into the intel thin mitx heatsink.

Not necesarrily as small as possible, but smaller is prefered.

Ok, let me reshape my question:

What is the cheapest way to get a small and quiet ubuntu box for basic tasks going?

OK, I didn't know you could get them for this cheap. This might be it.

EDIT: is there nucs with ethernet? yup.
