Whats the difference in write speeds and sustained write speeds?

NVME drives can have really fast sequential writes (eg copying a large video file) but if it goes on for too long it will slow down due to the controller running too hot or other controller differences, thus the sustained writes is a guide to how slow it will become over a long workload.

 

Random read/writes is what affects most performance scenarios, reading/writing lots of small files.

But as said above, aggregated benchmarks do not always tell the full picture about real-world usage so should be used as a guideline for which drives to look at more detailed reviews of only.
