Power supply sounds like more of a problem, or faulty RAM.

I'm waiting on making a decision on the RAM until I hear the results from a different PSU.

It's worth a try.

Troubleshooting is basically trial and error, if it's not the PSU then we can move onto something else. But we'll have no way of knowing if it's the PSU or not until it gets tried.

Personally, I would just tell him to get a new computer at that point.

well, we got the pc for free, and he only bought an 8 dollar cpu and a wifi stick thing so we can resuse the wifi dongle and just get maybe a 150 dollar pc on craigslist.

That would work.

If he's unwilling to try things to fix it though, then his best option would be to just replace it.

That's probably his best option if he's behaving the way you say he is.

I feel sorry for the support people that will have to deal with it though....

Try suggesting he fixes it himself if he knows so much about what the problem is?

Honestly, there's nothing we can do other than just let him deal with it on his own if he's that unwilling to accept help.

There should be a button cell battery on the motherboard:

Pull the power to the PC, and pop that out for 30 seconds or so. Then replace that and the power, and try booting.

Another important note: if he's got a Pentium 4, then he'll need a new motherboard to use the Q6600, as the sockets are incompatible.

Pentium 4 is on PGA 478.

If they're both on LGA 775, then you shouldn't have an issue.
