Hey guys,

I've been searching Google for an answer but I haven't found a something that really answers my question.

Is there a way to limit the bandwidth for a specific user via the router or some software or additional hardware?

By limit I mean, for example, give one person only 20GB of bandwidth and another 40GB of bandwidth.

There probably isn't, thought it was worth asking though.

Thanks in advance for anyone's help.

Not without a fairly complex setup, as far as I'm aware. I'd love to know if I'm wrong though, I'd be quite interested :)

Thanks mate!

Some genius needs to come up with something. Quite sure it would help a lot of other people who may be wanting to do the same thing.

I think it's because bandwidth limiting isn't something that's in a huge demand as far as consumer products go.

It doesn't need to be complex as such, one of the newer WD routers does the trick. It can get complicated if you're trying lo limit bandwidth of Windows users on the network via group policies and all that jazz. But it's not something that you can just enable on any modem or router, it needs to be a specific router, modem or switch that supports it

I am good at computer

I think there must be software, that you can install on the PC itself instead otherwise if you're looking for a constant connection for yourself the is Qos(quality of service) this makes sure that you always have a certain priority on the network

Hi,

Is this to limit kids on using up all the bandwidth or are we talking adults.  I installed software on my step-sons PC which limits his time on the computer which i found really useful. I have it set to 1 hour on 1 hour off. There is also a total block out period between 8pm and 9am. Of course i can override it but it also limits what sites he can use. Example: he wants you tube then i can password it and set say a 15min block for him.

It also does all the other filtering eg: Porn sites and the like. Also i can review what sites he has been on

Its called K9 Web Protection and is free to download and install with no adverts or crap. website link is http://www1.k9webprotection.com/

Hope that helps a little i haven't look into the bandwidth side of a program as i found time restriction was easier.

You just need a router that is a bit more advanced. I know that mikrotik(RouterOS) and ubiquiti(AirOS) have such capabilities. If you dont want to spend 30 dollars on a mikrotik router then you have to use a client side solution (e.g. some kind of software, and most of the software I know about are much more expensive than this router). Or use another PC as a router (PfSense as the OS).

I can send you link to all these devices if you are interested along with guides to set them up.

Thanks for the link, however it's not to limit kids as such just a certain someone who needs to spend less time on the computer (FYI it's not me ☺️),

i searched my whole childhood for one to use on my brother. I'm pretty sure it just doesn't exist. But it should. It fucking should.
