I built my first custom computer 2 years ago, and have been pretty pleased with the performance. However, my download speed always seems to cap at 7mbps. We pay for either 400 or 940mbps. It's not much of a problem most of the time but when it comes to downloading big games or videos it takes so much longer than my friends. I am using a Netgear night hawk router hard wired into my pc. Are their any bottle necks that I'm not thinking of or need to change to take advantage of my full internet speed? My build will be posted to show the motherboard.

MB/sec or mbit (granted either would be low)?  Which nighthawk is it?  Are you using a specific service like Steam or does it apply to all downloads?  What modem and ISP do you have?

WiFi speeds are theoretical. Plus the numerous things that can interfere with it. Try connecting a Ethernet cable and testing it. Bet the results will be better.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

He said he's hard-wired to the router, he's not using wifi.

@Rana_Loca
I would log into your router/modem if you can, and see what speed it says it's connected at (not just the Nighthawk, but your ISP modem box if you can as well, because if it has a web page you can access, it should show what it's Down-link speed is and that'll be the true-speed it's able to link at).  Can't hurt to check the Nighthawk as well to make sure it's WAN port is showing 100 meg or gigabit connection to your cable-box or w/e.  Maybe check if the Nighthawk needs a firmware update?

Are other other computers/phones/endpoints in the house you can run a speed test on, and are they any faster?  The results to those tests show if your modem is even getting what you're paying for, or if your PC is actually any kind of slowdown at all (could be something before it gets to the PC).
