Need help choosing the right CPU

Go to solution Solved by LienusLateTips,

Find a i5 2400 or 3470, either can be found for about $30 USD. The 3470 is faster but requires a BIOS update.

I wouldn't recommend a more expensive option: save for a new GPU.

Hello, I am just getting into PC gaming and I used my old system. I have a Intel Celeron Dual Core Intel Celeron G550, It's clocked at 2.6Ghz. Now for graphic I have a MSI Gaming X 1050ti. I'm sure most of you have figured out the reason i'm writing this right now:(. CPU BOTTLENECK:((((( I just want to play 1080p but for some games this isn't even a possibility. With some basic games running as low as 20fps, while the graphic card usage only reaches 15%:(( So I am looking for a new CPU, I don't want to spend too much now as I am just getting into the PC gaming genre. So would you guys/gals have any recommendations?. I'm looking for a CPU which will fit in an LGA1155 Mobo and will not bottleneck my CPU. My budget is around £80 but if that isn't possible tell me what you'd personally do in my senario. Thanks in advance for the help:)  PS- If any are you are curious, I got an ASUS P8H61-MX R2.0 mobo.

So if i went for a i5 2400, do you think ill be CPU bottlenecked in most games still? And is the BIOS update a hard thing to do? I am okay with computers but have never attempted to update anything other than a mobo? Also I really appreciate the advice:)

No, it won't be bottlenecked at all.

BIOS update is pretty easy. Here's a old LTT video showing you how to do it. It's released around the same time as your motherboard so it should be valid.

Man, I'd love to but it is unfortunately outta my price range:( Student here with only a part time job. Maybe one day:)

Ouch, alright.

What games are you looking to play in particular? The i5 (or even an i3 if that's too much) would be a significant upgrade for that 1050 Ti to stretch its legs a bit.

Bear in mind it may be a short-term solution.  Its expected that next-gen of consoles will bring multi-core gaming finally to the forefront and push PC users to need more cores than we currently do.  Still, probably a few years down the line before it becomes a big problem.

As you are just replacing the CPU its not like you have much choice, and in that price range I strongly believe you will still be bottlenecked depending on what games you play.

Personally I refer to https://www.cpubenchmark.net/mid_range_cpus.html as a guideline for CPU performance.  Its obviously not perfect, but it gives you a pretty good idea how different CPUs compare in raw performance.

Even a 20 pound i3 wouldn't bottleneck it.

Depends on the games and if future ones will push more AI, physics, etc.  Some games such as Assassins Creed Origins bottleneck on practically any CPU that isn't high-end.

Also the faster the CPU, the shorter the load times.  I was shocked how much a difference it can actually make.

Yeah, well I think im going to try the I5-3470, The BIOS update thing is super simple. Also watching old LTT videos is super strange. I've never eally watched their older vids, SUper cool. Thanks for the advice:)

I'm only going to be playing games such as GTAV, KF2, Fortnite. Stuff like that. Nothing too serious. Just need something for now to make them playable until i invest in a new system.

I'd be wary as Sandybridge chipsets can have RAM issues with Ivybridge CPUs.

I had to remove a RAM stick to get my own machine to POST when I upgraded it to an i5 3470T from an i3 2120 (done for AES-NI support not speed, before anyone wonders).

What do you think of the i5-3330, any better than the ones you recommended to me?

It's between the 3470 and the 2400 in performance I believe. You can pretty much compare these two generations clock for clock as they are nearly the same architecture.
