Yo.

I'm currently giving Litecoin mining try and I'm alarmed by the temperatures on my GPU. I figured they'd get pretty high but they just seem to keep climbing and not stabilising as such. I'm using a 7950 Twin Frozr III @ 1100/1400 with temps hitting 91 at the moment, so you can imagine that the fan is getting to R9 290 stock cooler level.

I basically rejigged my fans recently and I'm not particularly happy with the job and you guys'll probably tell me I'm being an idiot and doing it wrong.

So I have no fans pulling in air and am relying on the front of the PC to suck in air automatically.

(Using a Fractal Design Define R4) I have:

- 2 140s blowing out up top

- 1 120 blowing out side

- 1 120 blowing out back

- 1 120 blowing out on my Be Quiet! Dark Rock 2 (blowing out to the back fan)

These are all Fractal Design silent fans plus one Be Quiet! Silent Wings or whatever they are called on the CPU block.

This is probably a bad config but I'm not very good with airflow. Does anyone have some recommendations on what fan configs to try to improve airflow? I used to have a 140 on the front but used both on the top for looks xD

Thanks,

- Ross

So you have no intake fans?

Nope. I thought it was silly and person I was talking to about it was like "Nah, it'll passively intake air" but I think when you're kicking out silly amounts of heat this won't be too efficient.

I have a 140 and a 120 at the front and another 140 on the back, use that with another 120 on the top as well

I'll take that idea into consideration.

It might be easier just to re-jig one or two fans to the front from my current setup. The 120 on the side has me least convinced.

As Kang said you do need one or two intakes to bring in cool air. In my 900D I have 8 fans bringing air in and 4 fans taking air out creating positive pressure.

The 120 is used as an intake to blow cool air onto the GPU.

I think I'll try turning that around first.

Holy crap. Just took the side off of the case and the GPU dropped from 93 degrees to 83. Think I /may/ need some more fans hehe.

Try to balance the intake and exhaust about equally, with an extra fan as exhaust. If too many fans are as exhaust, air cannot flow freely as the case is deprived of intake air and vise versa.

A good setup will be 2 front @ 7 volts + side as intakes, and the 2 top and back fans as exhaust.

Move the top fans to the front and look at the temps going down!

Reckon the air will naturally rise and exhaust?

EDIT: Just flipped the fan. Dropped temps on the GPU by 7 degress. I'm almost down to the temps when the case doesn't have the side on. May try top fans at the front.

2 fans to front intake and one to side is pretty good. You don't really need 3 exhaust, maybe just two at top.

I only have 4 fans to play with so I may take the one from the back which does bugger all atm and use it as a front intake but not sure it'll have much effect.

With 4 fans I think you should put 2 to front regardless and have side be as passive intake.

So take the two 140mms from the top?

More like take 120mms from side and back to front as intake and leave top ones as exhaust.

Got it, I'll give it a go.
