First time overclocker

Go to solution Solved by deathjester,

Hi, Im overclocking an i5 4670k with a h100i in push/pull. This is my first time overclocking and I dont know what safe/acceptable temperatures to look for. If you know what are the safe/accepted temperatures under load and idle?

Aida 64 you are looking for 75-80C max (closer to 75C is nicer). Rendering you want to keep around 70 (which would be your real world max). Use Asus real bench and click on h.264. Don't use prime, unless you use prime blend, and if you do that, don't let it run past the first round of tests. Temps go crazy.

Temps lower then 70 on rendering are all gravy. Temps in mid 70's for 24/7 use are ok if you don't stream/render and use 100 percent of the computer. For instance my 4770k renders at 70 C, but plays planetside 2 at like 50C.

Try to boot into windows (not stress test) at 1.25v non adaptive at 4.6 with cache no higher then 3900, and some chips need 3500 cache). If it boots you got a good chip. If not try 4.5. If it boots? You still probably got a good chip. If not 4.4 etc. If it doesn't boot at 4.3? You got hosed.

With H100i you should be able to get close to 1.3v and turn a bad chip into a 4.3ghz chip at least. Dial in cache after clock speed. You need VCCIN higher on some chips to get overclocks. 1.9v is considered pretty safe. People run up to 2.1 but that is not really safe. VCCIN adds heat. So depending on the chip, it may run hotter then someone elses at the same cpu voltage. The only reason I can do 4.5 (and 4.6 if I was just gaming) on air, is my chip only needs 1.776 VCCIN to run those speeds.

The dual rad gives you a better chance at a higher speed on a bad chip. Anyways good luck on the silicon lottery and I hope you got a winner. :)
