Two SLI GPUs - when I plug my monitor into the second card, there is no signal on boot but only in windows

sjain

Motherboard - Asus X99-A

GPUs - Zotac GTX 980Ti AMP! (2 of those in SLI)

Monitor - Acer S277HK

Cable - DisplayPort 1.2

---

Hey everyone,

So the issue is in the title. I have two graphics cards installed in SLI, and one 4K monitor.

When I have my monitor plugged into the first GPU on the top, I get the normal monitor signal on boot, with the manufacturer logo, the text on how to enter BIOS, then the windows boot screen.

However, when I plug my monitor into the second GPU on the bottom (which I do because I want that as my primary GPU, and I do not want to re-arrange the GPUs) there is no monitor signal on boot - the manufacturer logo, the text on how to enter BIOS, then the windows boot screen are NOT DISPLAYED.

I have already tried clean installing my graphics drivers with DDU and reseating the graphics cards. any ideas as to what could be causing this?

its especially annoying because when my monitor loses signal, it dies completely, and you must unplug it from the wall, wait a few minutes, then plug it in again for it to work.

all help appreciated, thanks!

correct me if I'm wrong, but the POST and BIOS screen only displays on the primary GPU o_o (which would be your first GPU)

yes that is correct. btw, u reminded me. the little LED showing error codes and the tiny speaker which beeps for error codes, they are all normal, not showing any errors.

Yeah, everything is as it should be.

The second GPU is only there in a support mode.

Just re-arrange the GPUs.

wow, i didn't know that. so the PCI slot a GPU is in can seriously affect if you see the boot screen or not... thats crazy. Guess I'll just rearrange em then

are you just hotswapping the plug back and forth or are you actually taking the time to turn of the machine and then move the monitor cable.
