I game using an i5-6402p CPU and a GTX 1070. For the most part, I have zero issues while gaming. I optimize my games meticulously. I have found though that the CPU has just 1 minor issue. It likes to hit 100% CPU usage and hold there for about 1-8 seconds. Most of the time, it's about 3-5 seconds. And it mostly does this in very demanding titles such as The Division, GTA 5 or Mass Effect Andromeda. I myself think this it is due to the use of turbo boost throttling.

Now, I say this is a minor issue because it really does not affect game performance at all. There is no stuttering taking place. The only issue it presents really is it makes the temp go up. Depending on how long the 100% usages hold for.

What I would like to know is, if I were to upgrade to an i5-7600, will the higher operating frequency of 3.5 GHz(3.9 turbo at 4 cores) make that 100% CPU usage virtually disappear?

The i5-6402p operates at a frequency of 2.8 GHz(3.2 turbo at 4 cores).

Also, a sub question... If the max temp of my i5-6402p is 71 degrees C, what is a great temperature to game at the majority of long gaming sessions(1-3 hours)?

I mostly have the temp gaming at 50-55 degrees C when playing demanding titles. And I have never really let my CPU get anywhere near 60 degrees C.

All comments are much appreciated.

that 100% should in theory drop to round about 80%

@SidM That's exactly what I was thinking. Thanks.

the stock cooler sucks, buy an aftermarket air cooler which is pretty light on the wallet at around 40-60 bucks

I've always forgotten about upgrading my cooler because it's that 8th PC part if you know what I mean. I will look into that, thanks. I remember looking at the Hyper T2, T4 and the Cryorig M9i as some good coolers to consider. Is there anything wrong with these? Or do I really need to at least double the price?

You mean Cooler Master? As far as I know, Corsair has never manufactured air coolers.

Also, it's only a really good cooler if you can't afford a better option. Just throwing that out there, obviously some chips have no problem with it but others might.

@SidM I've always eyeballed that cooler as well. Now, what are things to look at when deciding on a cooler? Aside from if it will fit of course. Like, what makes one cooler better than the other? I think I can match up whether it's compatible with my CPU or not just by looking at the supported sockets.

@Crunchy Dragon  What makes one cooler better than another?

Heatsink size, fan size.

Bigger heatsinks have a larger surface area, which allows for more heat dissipation.

Bigger fans move more air than smaller fans.

The bequiet! Dark Rock Pro series are good coolers. So is the famed Noctua NH-D15.

@Crunchy Dragon So size, I see. I never did realize this. Thanks for the info. I will look into all these cooler recommendations. I would think(and hope) these coolers will create better case air flow as well. My socket is LGA1151 so hopefully these will go with it.

You can check to see if a heatsink is compatible via socket type, mounting brackets support many types of sockets! :)

Temperatures first and foremost will make one better than another, as well the noise of the unit and size. But if the temperatures are low, size can be compromised but be careful case clearance is a thing!

I love Noctua heatsinks, they're efficient and quiet!

but you may want to make sure that your cooler does not obstruct your ram slots.

@SidM I'm so glad you said this. I just looked at my ram slots and there is literally a millimeter between my stock cooler and the vacant ram slot to the right of it. Same on the other side of the cooler because my mobo just has to have some plastic piece over there basically labeling the mobo with BAZOOKA PLUS.

In all honesty, I'd avoid that heat-sink, it really doesn't mount all that friendly and the ram can be damaged easily with it. (Brother had his knock the heatsink off his ram stick, luckily the port didn't bend out or break.

@Tyler Moore If there's one thing I want in a new cooler, it's easy installation.

Never seen one too difficult to install! Just seen bad designs! :P

So really at this point match the socket type, track down one you like and spec it out.

Peskanova already knows, only thing Noctua is known to be hideous with the brown fans but trust they the good good. :P

@Peskanova But they're so ugly.

i heard on internet that a 4790k oc on air max is 4.6 , with my 0 skills with oc I achieveed 4,6 at less than 1,35 (I think at 1.25 ) at 60º playing  68-72º on stress test, ambient temperature on idle with 600-800rpm (depend on ambient) that is for me more beauty than any fan color , and mount design vs 212 is like night and day

@Peskanova My i5 runs at 2.8-3.2 GHz and if I upgrade to an i5-7600, it will still only run at 3.5-3.9 GHz. I don't need a Noctua with either of these CPU's and practically ANY cooler will be better than my stock Intel cooler. I'm eyeballing the Cryorig M9i, C7 and H7 as what I may go with right now. The M9i I hear is an excellent cooler for my non-OC CPU. The Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO or LED is also not but about 3-5 degrees behind the Cryorigs. My main concern is upgrading my CPU. Temps are not an issue when you optimize graphic settings meticulously.

althoug all its measured in ghz its frecuency, at same freq 7600 is far better than a old i5, I came from a 2500k at 3,6-3,8 with a rx480 8gb and cpu usage was 100% and temps with a decent cooler was fine and now my gf (is sitting next to me with his pc) with a 7600 and a 1060 6gb can play at any game 60fps without problem (sometimes she plays overwatch or lol with second life high setings on and youtube and never had a problem and never touched a setting in a game ;:D)

And with a 212 I think his temps are wrong because idle = ambient temp and gaming 65º max (playing pubg also) 8gb ram sigle slot  0 problems
