I currently have 2 old gaming computer with exact same component except the video cards. I unfortunately didn't maintain the thermal paste well enough and by removing the cooler from one of them bent the processor holder somehow (the square hinged metal thing with the lever).

I removed the processor and by the look of it the lid seems to have very very slight bump on it so i guess the thermal paste got very hard and fused the processor lid and the coil plate together and by lifting the whole thing probably bent the holder and made the bump on the lid anyhow that's the only logical thing i can think of.

Long story short It doesn't work anymore. So that PC i consider it dead. My second one (Exact copy except the video card) is still working but suddenly is running at very high temps. 56C-58C on idle and 95C to 100C in Heroes of the Storm which i used to run in the 65C-68C before. I noticed i am thermal throttling very bad. And i am scared to remove the cooler and change it and break that one too and it's my last computer.

The processor is an I7-950 running at 3.06ghz, 18 gb ram, 680 GTX, 350 GB Caviar Blue sata 2 drive.

Still run lots of game very well. My latest addition is Kingdom Come Deliverance an i run it very fluid at 1080p at Medium settings and 1 is on high.

I haven't had time to save money for a new PC yet as i only expected to change it in 2 years since it run all games pretty smoothly still.

I would keep the 680 GTX and probably change it a year or 2 and my power supply will be enough, i have a 1200 watts (used to run quad SLI in that computer and i much needed it)

I was leaning for a high clock cpu as Solidworks is heavily affected by clock speed. Especially when you automate it. And programming compiler's too. So i was leaning toward a 6600K and OC it very high on a H110. But since i have to upgrade quick and have a small last second budget i am thinking of Ryzen 5 2600. Mainly because it come with a fan and most games use at most 4 cores now and this has 6 so it's good for another couple years. The clock speed is very good too without overclocking.

My budget for such short notice is 950$ CAD and for that i need to get : Processor, Motherboard, Ram, Case, Storage, OS

I already have Power Supply (an old Seasonic 1200 Watts platinum), Video card 680 GTX (currently running in pcie 2.0 because of my mobo but it could run faster in a board with 3.0)

What i was thinking right now is :

- Ryzen 5 2600 good base clock speed, great turbo clock, 6 cores, comes with apparently a very decent cooler for stock speed

- B450 motherboard seems most have good sound card, M2 type M slots, x16 3.0 (if the board can have 2 M2 that be even greater as i could upgrade later on if a deal come by)

- i want 16 GB of ram. My old PC is running triple channel ddr3 (3 x 2 gb) + (3 x 4 gb) = 18gb and i find it good enough even if it's a bastard mix. I don't need RGB or fancy stuff. ram speed is not important for me, all i care is that it must be 2 x 8gb so i can later one upgrade another 2 x 8 to have 32 gb.

- I need a 500gb storage. I'm fed up of 7200 rpm disk and it's time to upgrade. I was thinking M2. I have found some ADATA M2 type M 500 gb for 140$ on amazon.ca and since it's 10 times faster than my 7,200 rpm it's a very good upgrade for me. I currently only have 300 gb storage so 500 gb is plenty enough

- OS i want windows 10 pro or home same thing in my case but just looking if anybody knows of a deal somewhere.

- Case again i don't care for RGB or plexi on the side. As long as it fits a 680 GTX and ATX mobo i am fine. If it could be NOT a full tower that would be great. My last one i went all out and lets just say LAN party are less fun when you have to walk around with a full tower of 3 billion pounds

Any suggestion and tips are welcome.

Make a PCPartPicker list for your build, it's easier to see all the components that way.

You cant overclock k skus on anything other than z170/270/370 on the intel side, the r5 2600 is good, for the windows key, just get something on kinguin.

The m.2 isn't any faster than a normal ssd, but the form factor just makes it more convenient than its ssd counterpart.  I threw in a good psu for good measure, you'll never need 750w in a modern mid/high range pc, and I trust a newer 750w psu than a (insert age here) year old 1200w one

🙂

Good, i did not know some Micro ATX could with long video card. This one allow huge space saving. I also have a 2 years old 650w that is still in it's original box that i was planning to switch my 1200w for when it dies. I might actually just use the new one directly.

Thanks alot.

i cannot reuse my OS key. it's a windows 7 upgrade to 10.

And i was aware of the sata M2. the size is the reason why i want one. Also i noticed that some are less expensive than the 2.5" counter part. All in all it's better than a 7,200 RPM.

Thanks for the build.

don't format your HDD and set the boot order to it when you have the build, then download ProduKey to find the CD-key. use that when you do a fresh install of windows.

So you can reuse the same CD-key on another computer and activate it even if it's an upgrade and not a new version ?

Because i already made the Windows 10 setup on a usb and i have the key but i haven't made a clean install yet.

you might need to call up microsoft to activate it, but it should work.

I just contacted them and It doesn't work like that. They said i'll need to install Windows 7 Pro first. Update it to latest version. Activate which will require me to call them. Then i can start the windows 10 upgrade using the full install straight from windows and it should give me the option to upgrade. Then i need to use my upgrade key and to activate it i will also need to call them again.

As the guy said, Upgrade keys are not the same as new keys. I doesn't work with fresh install.

So i can safe on it but at that point i don't want to be stuck with again 20 GB of useless files. I will buy a new one just for the fact it is really clean install.

I've taken the keys given from the upgrade and used them directly on windows 10 on a fresh install and thwy'vw worked just fine, you don't retain any new files using the upgrade key to fresh install a new OS.

Would the ASRock B450M Pro4 be a good choice over the Asus - TUF B450M-PLUS GAMING Micro ATX AM4 that hconverse02 suggested ? As lee32uk suggested with a video link that the TUF was a bad choice.

I really like the case hconverse02 provided.That MicroATX look nice and comes with 2 fans so i don't have to buy more right now.
