I would highly recommend swapping out that PSU. HP is one of those brand that just toss in any ol' 300W PSU and call it a day. 400W is the bare minimal for unlocked chips and a entry level GPU. It's not worth the risk of keeping that 300W OEM CPU.

do they use proprietary cabvles for psu to m,obo?

Well i7-6700k first of all doesnt make sence with a 300wat psu. Also what mobo you are using? If its z170 its ok for oc and you will need a new psu.

But the 1050ti is very power efficient so i guess you dont need to change it, BUT i highly reccomend getting a 550w at least.

Yes agreed HP does do the bare minimum with PSUs. Thanks for your feedback also, I will be upgrading my PSU to a 600watt to give me more then enough

Yes I think so

I'd start with changing the power supply. By pure wattage it might be fine, but the problem is that the quality might be poor. Refer to the PSU tier list available on that forum and choose something in your budget.

I will thank you for the feedback and help

I always thought it was a little fishy with such a low psu and everything else but never thought to much into it until now when I’m trying to upgrade the graphics card. Thanks for your feedback too, I will be upgrading to a 600watt psu.

Change the PSU and get a 1060.

Would a 1060 be a better option? I have about $250 I’m willing to spend on a graphics card. Maybe $300

Another question if nobody minds answering for me, if not it’s ok. Would I have to do any Bios or whatever updates if I install a new psu and graphics card?

You do not. The PC has no way of knowing of what PSU its being powered by. Your GPU upgrade can be a different question, because some older HP pre builts sometimes don't play well with newer gen hardware. So you need to hop on the HP website and see if it has that kind of restriction. I don't think it will happen because that is a newer HP the what I'm used to. But when your working with prebuilts, expect anything to happen.

BTW, Update the BIOS just to be safe, just download the EXE and run it without anything in the background. No need for DOS or special tools.

Thank you for the feedback. I recently ran the newest bios update for mine.

It Depends...if it is one from fsp froup i would recomand you to use it (i use theese things now for more than 16 years(i got them from old prebuilts)and they all still work like new(exept the fans on some of them because they were completly destroyed by dust and other ``things`` :D

If his motherboard is using proprietary cables, does it not make him not able to change the psu to other brands because the headers wont fit?
