Buying 2x 1080ti's NOW vs. When 1180's Launch ??

Trying to plan my next build which will really be a beast of a gaming pc. Custom-looped 2x 1080ti's, either on x299 chipset or z370 with the i7-8086k. 

 

The dilemma I face is that if everyone's expectations that the 1180 cards will launch on or around August 30, 2018 are correct, then wouldn't it be correct to assume that the prices of the 1080ti's would drop substantially?

 

I just don't know if doing this build right now is a great idea. How much of a drop in price do you think we can expect to see on the 1080ti's when the 1180 cards launch?

 

Substantial enough that it's worth waiting a month? Or maybe like $50 at most where for me it really wouldn't matter.

 

Does anyone remember how the price of the 980 cards was affected when the 1080 line launched?

 

ALSO: What if the new 1180ti's really have 24gb and they're going for under $1000 ? Then it makes no sense to buy two 1080ti's for over $1400, does it?

It is very likely that the 1180/2080 will not be much faster than the 1080ti when it launches

the 1180ti will most definitely won't have 24gb of vram, that's absurd for any gaming, which is what the gtx series cards are for (mostly). My bet is around 16gb at most. But to answer your question, definitely wait until they launch, prices should fall for the 10 series but it might be a better deal to just get two 1180s, because they're supposed to be more or less equivalent to the 1080ti.

Depends on a lot of things. If it has tensor cores, GDDR6, and an actually new architecture compared to Pascal which was Maxwell then I would say it could potentially be a lot faster 

 

Also the launch is August 20th and 21st at Gamescon

Yes, thats why I said on launch. The new tech will be there, like ray tracing etc... but it will take a while for it to get usefull in games. Once it does, it will definitely take an edge over Pascal.

Yeah it'll probably be closed off like gameworks too. But it's 16 days away so I would just wait and see.

TBH I was not aware of an official launch date. I just followed some of the rumors flying around but I was on holidays so I may have missed something.

Historically, prices aren't affected too much on the old gen products until after the new gen products settle in. When the demand for the new gen products start to slow down, that's when you see some good rebates.

 

That said, the GTX 2000 series is probably gonna be sold out for some time after launch. I personally don't anticipate prices dropping much on the GTX 1080Ti. That said, you'd already be spending about $1400. If you're willing to spend that much, then I don't think saving $50-$100 per card is that big of a deal.

 

The only way it would make sense to buy 2x GTX 1080Ti's is if the GTX 2080 isn't much faster than the GTX 1080. Also, it wouldn't make any sense to buy a SLI rig if the games you play aren't SLI compatible either natively or through manual fixes. I'd say wait before you make the jump. If the GTX 2080 ends up being faster by 50% or more, then it might be smarter to get a GTX 2080. Edit: Also, the VRAM of SLI'd cards don't stack. 2x 12GB cards in SLI still equate to 12GB due to how SLI works. MGPU allows the memory of two cards to pool, but I don't think we've seen any game that makes use of that feature yet.

@Frankenburger thank you for the information. That's what I had stated, and am trying to figure out - if the price drop is about $50 only, then it doesn't even matter.

 

What do you mean tho that the VRAM doesn't stack? Then what is the point of having two cards connected via SLI? 

 

Also, what are you suggesting as for the difference in models between the 1180 & 2080? Are you saying that the new line could be either, or are you saying there will be both 1180 & 2080 models?

Also, what are you suggesting as for the difference in models between the 1180 & 2080? Are you saying that the new line could be either, or are you saying there will be both 1180 & 2080 models?

The point of SLI has always been about getting more performance. With SLI, the information from one card is copied into another, aka mirroring, kind of like Raid 1. This is why your VRAM isn't doubled when using SLI.

 

When someone says 2080, they mean 1180, and vice versa. I'm going with 2080 because that's what the most current rumor says Nvidia will call it.

Well if you are playing the numbers game your mind will always tell you need the latest and greatest.  If you are logically asking yourself if the current gen can fit your current needs for the foreseeable future then the 1080 Ti might be your best bang for your buck if you 1080, 1440P, or don't mind going lower FPS/refresh at 4K.  

 

Honestly I am perfectly fine on 1080 Ti and don't plan to upgrade unless the 1180 Ti, which by the way are no where close to being release blow me away in the future.  

 

With that being said 1080 Ti are being sold as little as $650 new and on forums $500, however unless the card is from someone like EVGA where the warranty is manufactured there is a bit of risk considering the card could have been mined on or overclocked.  Point being if your willing to gamble it's not crazy to offer someone under $500 for a used non EVGA card.  I only seeing the used buying market getting better day by day since the announcement on the 20th with draw more people to sell there cards to avoid massive value loss and when the cards are announced and when the cards go on sale (low stock probably), oh boy get ready for some massive used deals and new 1080 Ti at least starting at $600

Going back to the question - if you are considering paying about $1400 for 2x 1080ti right now but are prepared to wait then why not simply see the price of the new GPUs? You are very set on comparing 2x1080ti vs. 1x 2080 but chances are you will be able to consider 2x2080 as well.

@Lathlaer I hear you, however the the point is having to wait and not knowing exactly how long. If they predict that nVidia will reveal the new cards at Gamescon around August 21st - then exactly how long after that generally does it take for them to be available to retail consumers?

Can't predict the future - it took about 20 days from announcement to release in the case of Pascal and almost immediately in the case of Maxwell. Could go either way ;-)
