I had pulled out front IO from a sun server at my workplace which they were scraping without knowing it would be useful or not. I want to know whether it can be used with a desktop.

Part nos

Dvd drive - sun fru pn : 371-1106-06

Front IO - sun fru pn: 373-0021-02 rev:50

The above one is for dvd drive and the below one is for front IO

Could you provide more pictures of the IO ports, and any connectors that come off the board?

Things like USB and Audio ports can be reused, but special lights for network adapters and hard drives are far less likely to be compatible.

Unscrew that board from the back of the DVD drive. You may find a slim SATA connector underneath. From there just use a slim SATA to SATA adapter of your choice.

For the other I/O... Likely proprietary

Edit: If you find a PATA connector, don't bother with it IMO... slim DVD drives are pretty common and would likely cost less than an adapter you would need to buy to make it work on a modern machine.

There's no place like ~

Why in the world would you want to re-purpose that outside its intended chassis? It doesn't even have modern connectors. Optical drives are like $15 new on amazon or newegg....

Since it was laying around I wondered can it be used.

The drive could be repurposed for something like an older laptop but really it isn't really worth messing with...especially being just a DVD drive.
