Photography/ video editing.

Hi all,

Looking for the best spec mbp I can get for the price, but I am  little confused with the specs that I should get for photo and video editing. I've put two below and they are both around the same price. I'm also using student discount for any one wondering.

Any questions please ask!

Cheers!

how do you store your files?
even 256gb is for that kind of task very little...
Do you rely on apple specific software?

Ill probably be getting a external drive which i will be editing off so the storage doesn't really matter. The only other laptop that I would be looking at would be the dell xps 13 which i have had before and the coil whine was horrible.

then i'd take the nontouchbar one with the 16GB and i7
though if i were at that point, i'd stretch the budget nonetheless to 256GB

If I swap the storage to 256gb Id have to go with the i5 not the i7 to save money, is it still worth the upgrade in storage?

quick question, as research has shown that macbooks may manage the ram usage better: what's your ram usage like on previous machines?
I completely overlooked the fact that the TB Macbooks have quadcores, sorry for that :S If you don't edit high res video clips, going with 8 gb might be fine, but that really depends on usage.
Personally, I have filled my 16GB quite a few times lately with the LR panorama tool, but other than that don't need the 16GB very often. So really depends.

EDIT: bottomline is: if you don't exceed 8 GB on normal usage (normal for you), then I'd rather get the TB macbook with the quadcores. If you are constantly above 8GB, get the i5 nTB macbook with 256 GB imo

It would mainly be for 4k footage which I sometimes film in and also for lightroom/ photoshop. I also want to make it last a long time bec you cant upgrade the ram on the new mbp.

My mate just told me to take a look at the dell xps sale that's going on and i've found the new dell xps 13 with decent specs for a hell of a lot cheaper then the mac. Does the xps 13 still have the coil whine issues and hot temperatures? Im now completely confused with whats the best option.

coil whine is always a lottery. Don't know bout the temperature, but I'd probably take it all day over the mb

My take on this is that A) there's no optimal product and B) the XPS is way better value, so I'd buy it, if it has the issues send it back and get a macbook.

Hello me again,

So I brought the xps but of course it had coil whine and also a dead pixel so sent it back.

Some one told me to look at cex which sells used electronics and came across this mbp for £1485. But come to think about it I want the laptop to last so with the newer 2018 mbp I would probably increase the ram to 16gb making it £1735. Just wanted to see if this is work the around £300 more?

Cheers!
