External WiFi antenna?

So I'm wondering if there's any official (or even DIY) external WiFi antennas I can connect to my mobile - specifically to act as a range extender on my end. There's plenty of public WiFi around my work (corporate too cheap for employee internet), but it's all just barely out of my phone's range to transmit back to. 

I tried Google earlier (still at work), but everything I got back was from 2013. 

I've got an OTG cable, but one of the results said using a USB antenna required rooting the device & loading Linux drivers on it...!?

Anyone know if this is even feasible?

Yes. But finding one that will difficult. Search Google for USB OTG (on the go) WiFi adaptor. I found a couple but vibe with antennas so far.

Basically you need to find one that android will recognise. There are guides around aswell. Like this one seems to be ok and mentions WiFi repeaters aswell.
