Haswell Upgrade?

Go to solution Solved by Fasauceome,

Hard to believe your CPU is bottlenecking, although could be bad multitasking support. I use a 4790k with a 1070 and am pleased to say it's not at all a bottleneck. Very good system for another couple years.

Okay so currently I’m waiting for the new stuff to drop then I’m going to try and get my hands on an 8700k which will be a whole new platform for me. Right now I’m rocking and i5-4590 combo’d with a 1070 reference, 12 gb ddr3, and I want to say a Gigabyte GA-H81M-H.

I get bottlenecked on pretty much every game that I am playing (1080 at 144hz). Would it be worth upgrading to a 4770k or even 4790k?

I saw that I could sell the 4590 for ~90 usd and buy an 4770k for just under 200 usd as well as a 4790k for around 250 usd. Would that be a worthwhile trade for me while I wait for the new releases?

one more thing, I do have a cheap aio cooler so I could oc slightly better that a stock cooler. It’s the h60i from Corsair.

I was thinking if I did get that I would always have that around to keep for a good backup system.

  • GeForce GTX 1070 Founders 8gb
  • Intel i7-8700k - H60 Corsair AIO Cooler
  • MSI Z370 M5
  • EVGA Supernova 750 Watt
  • 2 x 8 G. Skill Ripjaws DDR4 3200 cl 16.
  • Phanteks Eclipse P300
  • 500 gb samsung 960 evo / 1tb hdd
  • Corsair K70 rgb cherry mx blue - YMDK PBT Double Shot Pudding Keycaps
  • Corsair M65 RGB pro (weights removed) 400 dpi.
  • Bravo Audio V2 Amp
  • Massdrop AKG K7XX

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

You won't be overclocking on that motherboard.

Side note: "slightly better than stock cooler" is blowing on the CPU with your mouth. Having an aftermarket cooler of just about any kind beats stock, but the h81 does not overclock as far as I'm aware. K-sku still relevant because it has higher base and boost clocks anyway.

Well if your 4790k performs as well as you say it does I just might have to grab one of those even without the oc and I can sit on it for even longer than I was planning before I upgrade. Thanks for you replies dude

You should probably get the 4790 though considering the board you have.

You also might want to see if the "all cores turbo" feature is available on your motherboard as a pseudo-overclock. Your water cooler should be able to keep up.

I would wait for 8 core 16 thread mainstream Intel chips or the higher core count (and hopefully higher clock) AMD chips coming at some point. We're in the middle of a CPU arms race so waiting a but more will yield good results imo

If you don't have active problems with the current platform I wouldn't bother

Indeed just upgrade to an i7 on your current platform, that should remove any bottlenecking from lack of cores.

No need to do a complete system change to a newer socket and DDR4.

I have a 4770 and it's still a great chip with my 980ti. The locked CPUs aren't far behind the K models but are usually a lot cheaper

You've got to look at what makes sense and what is realistic, a 'K' CPU on a 'H' board doesn't make sense and isn't realistic.

Say if he wants to overclock, he can't with his current board so if this is something he really wanted to do he'd have to spend more money on getting a Z87 or Z97 board.

It makes perfect sense if OP can get a good deal on one. Just looking at my used market they're usually a bit higher than the K versions

If it costs only a bit more they may as well just go for the K. They will also hold better resale value long term so you're not really paying much for it
