CPU or GPU upgrade?

TamatiNZ

I am looking to make an upgrade to my current PC as I have had it for about 3 years now and I want better performance in the games I play. Currently I mainly play League of Legends, which runs well at max settings, World of Warcraft which runs ok but at med-high settings not ultra, and Runescape, which doesn't really matter. I also do play other games, however not as often as these 3. They are mainly shooters, RPGs such as fallout 4, skyrim, the list goes on.

The currents specs of my computer is an intel i5 6500 @ 3.2ghz, 8gb ram, Nvidia Geforce GTX 950, 1tb hdd and 240gb ssd. The motherboard is a Gigabyte B150M-D3h-CF LGA 1151 socket.

I live in New Zealand so please note that when suggesting parts and prices, as my budget is about 700 NZD for either a CPU or a GPU or for both, if its possible to upgrade both for that amount of money. At the moment I just use pricespy nz to search for the cheapest parts which can be found here. Also after reading the rules thread I should say I run double monitors, ASUS VE248 1920x1080.

Thanks guys

@ZeouLs would you be able to point me in the direction of some CPU examples? I'm fairly new to this sort of thing and am unsure what is really an upgrade for me

edit: just saw the links in your post my bad :)

ideal situation would be upgrading both but you would need to upgrade your motherboard to if you wanted a newer 7-8th gen cpu

i would wait for the 11 series to come out before buying the gpu and get a cpu and motherboard now

for gaming i highly recommend intel i5 8400 or 8600k if you can afford it

for gaming/streaming ryzen 5/7 is a good investment and it also has a good upgrade path in the future and its cheaper if you looking for lower priced parts

but if you where getting intel you would need a good z370 motherboard if you wanted to overclock and a good cpu cooler but that depends on your preference .

currently im using an intel i5 8400 and a gtx 1050 and that runs fine i am building a new pc soon

i have used ryzen before and there amazing for video editing and multi tasking but do lack slightly behind intel in games it all depends on what you would like

for the gpu side a 1070/ti is a good upgrade with the ti you can overclock to get around the 1080 performance but i would wait until 11 series come out and either get one of them or buy a 10 series as the prices will drop

this is all based on personal thoughts its up to you in the end but i hoped this helped. :)

Arctic frost

my first build

cpu: intel i5 8600k

cpu cooler: ARCTIC - Freezer 33 eSports ONE

motherboard: Asus ROG strix z370-E

ram: Corsair - Vengeance LPX 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR4-2133

ssd: Kingston - A400 240GB 2.5" Solid State Drive

hdd: Western Digital - Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive

gpu: Asus - GeForce GTX 1060 6GB Dual Series

case: NZXT - S340 Elite (White)

psu: EVGA - B3 550W 80+ Bronze

thanks to @seoz for helping make the list :P and its based of her custom rig

Your motherboard is as far as I know locked for overclocking so everything that has a K at the end isnt beneficial for you, since you cant overclock those (If you didnt know the difference between like an i7-7700 and i7-7700K is that the K version can be overclocked while the non K version is only stock speeds)

I would rather save a bit more money since with that budget you either get a new GPU like 1070

https://pricespy.co.nz/search?q=1070&p=3853855

or you go for a CPU + GPU combo which I wouldnt advise since there is little to no difference between 6th gen and 7th gen i5

A cheap RX 570 looks fine at like $350

buy a Ryzen 3000 CPU next year with a 16GB kit of fast memory, your current CPU is still fine for 1080p 60hz gaming

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

a RAM upgrade really isn't going to do too much, best to save that for when he upgrades the CPU so he can more easily resell the old package

a 16GB 2 stick kit will also clock higher than trying to mix memory to get 16GBs

Indeed. Though its what i would suggest if his keeping his CPU for while. His CPU is still quite capable for what it is

@GoldenLag I was just checking the link on the 1060 you posted, on pcpartpicker it is 6gb but on Mightape it is 3gb, is that a typo on pcpartpicker or am I just incorrect?

Adding onto this, what is the difference between this 1060 and this 1060? Sorry if this seems like a dumb question!

Just get the RX 580 then. The 3GB 1060 is bad value

Never worth getting a 3GB 1060

but if the RX 570 is way cheaper just buy that, it'll be fine.
