So I’ve been looking at a lot of CPUs and people told me intel was better for gaming and gaming is all I do. So now I have narrowed it down to 2 CPUs. The i5 8600K and the i7 8700K. I was originally going to buy a locked one because I’m to scared to OC but a lot of people told me that buying a unlocked processor is worth it so that when it starts to get old you can get more power out of it. I’m pairing it with a GTX 1080. So for purely gaming which one would give me better value the 8600K or 8700K?

Will the X62 be good enough?

yes it would, tough if you are not planning to overclock the chip at all, the 8700 runs cooler, consumes less power vs a OCd 8700K and is architecurally very much the same chip.

only get this one if you are not planning to overclock ever tough. if you do want to up the clocks down the line the 8700K is the sensible option.

What about the 8600k or Ryzen 2700X?

Both worse, but cheaper than 8700k.

So for just gaming and not OCing for a long time the 8700k is best? I thought Ryzen was better since its pretty much already maxed and has a good stock cooler and am4 will last until at least 2020 or 8600k since it’s 100 usd cheaper and the only major difference I can find is HT

Ryzen out of the box maxed = slower than 8700k @stock in gaming.

If you have to buy a new CPU 2020 you've bought wrong stuff. 8700k will last you atleast 5-7years without any need to upgrade. This upgrading path nonsense is just marketing like "military grade" or writing 8-Core on the box of a FX8350 when its clearly a 4core CPU.

HT is worth it. Its as easy as it sounds. Games will run with higher minimums and you are equipped for games that use 6threads or more and still can multitask without loosing performance to your multitasking or windows/background apps while gaming.

And btw the stock cooler of Ryzen isnt as great as many say. Its just barely enough to use... if you are ok with 80°C max temps +/-.
