So I currently have a system with an i5-8400, and the stock Intel heatsink. The case has good airflow too. However, at idle, the 8400 hovers around 40-45 degrees C and when I play CS:GO it can go up to 90. It may be due to the fact that it is under my desk and it does not have good airflow around it, but I'm not too sure. Could it be solely due to restricted airflow around the PC?

Thats indeed really high for a low tdp chip like a 8400, even with a stock cooler. People give stock coolers flak, but they're mostly not as bad as their rep.

I don't think airflow is the problem here, neither is the stock cooler. Sounds more like a bad mount to me, your cooler might not be completely seated. Or maybe your thermal grease dried out?

Most of people using stock coolers do not report anything. They don't even check anything, they just use it until something is wrong.

But I agree - it's really high temperature for this processor.

Yee.. I think that you should buy one of the equivalents to 212 evo. Any cheap 1 tower cooler with atleast some reputation should be good. It is really high temp for that cpu, especially when only playing games(it should be aroung 60 degrees). It should not reach those temps even during stress test. The mounting system on intel stock coolers is terrible.

Intel stock cooler is good if case has good airflow and mounted properly, aslong as cpu isnt being overvolted.

Do you think if I use one or two USB fans to blow the hot air away from the back and top of the PC, that it would help?

I made some compromise and moved the PC to the top of the table, where there is lots of airflow. my idle temps are around 45-50 degrees on the cpu, and 45 on the gpu. Under stress the cpu still goes up to 80, and the gpu goes up to 75 though. I did some testing and before I moved the PC, the temps were more like 55-60 cpu and 50 gpu on idle, and 90-100 cpu and 80-90 gpu under not very strenuous games. Could be something to do with the prebuilt alienware PC having bad case airflow?

By usb fans do you mean case mounted fans? The more air you get moving through the case, either by forcing more air in, or venting more out will reduce temperatures. Each had its own advantagrs and disadvantages but achirve similar results temperature wise.
