Drain it before long-distance transport just to be safe. The smallest bumps in the road can shift the water and fittings, wouldn't risk it.

Also once you've transported it, check all the fittings are still snug and none were shaken up in transport.

If its soft tubing with compression fittings you 'could' just pack the inside of the case to ensure nothing moves about such as the res and graphics card.

i moved from south England to North Scotland (ofc nowhere near the distance ur's will be traveling) and my system was fine, even though my glass tube res is fitted verticaly via a L bracket to the bottom of my case (Flexes alot).

but to be safe i would advise against it. .Drain it to be safe.

Do as i say not as i do :P

do you have a suggestion for how to pack the PC itself? i still have the packaging material for the case, and the box, along with boxes for the other components.

That's a heck of a trip,I wouldn't take the chance of a single large pothole ruining everything.

At the very least drain in and take out the GPU,but for this long of a trip I would disassemble the whole thing.

I used an old case box for an older PC i once had. The box was bigger than it needed to be so i padded it out with pillows.

Just drain the system, this isn't even negotiable! It's a must!

And if you have neither GPU inside nor any other PCI-E device than just pack it into the box as it came on. That being said, if you have a reservoir, then just place a lot of paper towels around it with some tape around it. And that's pretty much it.

The mistake I made back in the day when transporting the system was not removing the GPU, while I did secure it, I just had no extra space for it. So my PCI-E slot got damaged.

P.S. make sure the tubing is dry later on. You might as well while flushing it, clean it and dry it
