Noctua Fan

Go to solution Solved by Kayn,

My CPU cooler, even though it's stock, it's silent. In my BOIS, it's also set to silent mode. It doesn't bother me, I just feel tricked.

Well quiet is different from each person, your quiet could be my loud or the other way around. It's a moving part so it's going to make some noise.

Okay so a while ago, I bought NF-F12 (a fan from noctua). That's because of the whole "it's so quiet..." thing and because Linus recommends them. It was 20€ and it arrived fast. First thing - it's a heavy fan. Like for real. Then I installed it in my system - and it was incredibly noisy at 12V. I was lucky that they included 7V adapter. I plugged in 7V adaptor and it was still noisy, but not that much. And then I saw, they also included 4-pin fan splitter. I plugged that splitter into my CPU fan header and then on one end CPU fan and on the other NF-F12. Now I can barely hear it, but whenever CPU gets hot (it rarely reaches 70°C), it starts to sound like a jet engine.

So, do I have a bad unit, or is it just noisy? I'm OK with the amount of airflow it pushes even in PWM mode. Why is it so quiet for other people? I guess, I fell on the whole marketing of Noctua itself. What are your thoughts on this?

You got a fan that's meant for a radiator, so with a few of them are going to cool the liquid in the radiator without making much noise and your cpu won't heat up much :P

Well, I bought it to use it in front of my case, because of non removable hard drive cages.

Are you sure it is the Noctua fan that is making the 'jet noise'? It could be your stock cpu cooler. Also try check in the bios for any cpu fan profile setting.

If you use that splitter on the cpu header for both NF-F12 and the cpu cooler, obviously when the cpu cooler fan spins up, the NF-F12 is going to ramp up too.

Since the NF-F12 is PWM it's going to spin faster or slower depending on your CPU temperature. I don't like using PWM fans for that reason for a case fans. I would have gotten a regular 3 pin fan so then it won't fluctuate when the temperature goes from hot to cold. Also most fans are all noisy at 12v so that should be no surprise. The noise that you're hearing when it's at 7v is probably the air being pushed by the fan and not the fan motor.
