Ever since I was little, like a lot of people, I have been using a PC (keyboard) to type things (obviously). I have never considered myself a fast or accurate typer because I never really learned the proper way to type (I want to get faster). I think the proper way is to put your index fingers on F and J keys but I have never done this. I don't know exactly what people who type like me are called (I think there's a name) but I like to skip around my keyboard and keep the hands in awkward spots not really utilizing all my fingers (mostly my index and middle fingers because I guess it's what I got used to).

But moving on from explaining my position, what I am trying to ask is if it's worth it to re-learn how I type the proper way to get quicker or type how I ready do but practice to get quicker at pressing keys.

With either decision how should I go about practicing typing to get quicker?

Just type how you've always typed, I type an incorrect way but it's just natural for me and it doesn't hurt my cut fingers. Unless you need to type faster, just stick with what's natural.

You can only get faster with time no matter what, so just playing typing games might help, I type about 12-15 pages everyday per class  and it's improved my typing in school. I don't type the fastest, but I definitely have less mistakes than anyone else.

What's driving this need to be faster?

Only you can say whether it'd be worth it or not. Does it bother you that other people can type faster than you? If so, you should ask yourself " why does it bother me?" Do you  actually do so much typing that you'd benefit from being able to type faster, or is this just one of those "I've heard it's the Right Way(TM) of doing it" kind of a deal? If it's the latter, then I'm going to say no. There's zero need to follow behind everyone else, there's no Right Way(TM), and the only reasons you should pay attention to are: would it actually benefit you and would you actually feel any more comfortable or not.

I don't see why you'd want to re-learn how to type just for speed, it's difficult to relearn an entire system that your muscle memory has stored for years. I don't even use the traditional F & J finger positions because they're just downright uncomfortable, and as a result I feel much more comfrtable using what I've become acustomed to over 8 years of typing.

Just because it's the 'right way' to do it, doesn't mean you should do it.
