I currently have a rig that I am planning on using for light video editing and maybe some gaming. My question is whether it would be best to a) stick with my gigabyte ga-x58a-ud3r and i7-950, b) buy a newer/better lga 1366 processor like an i7-980x 6 core for about $150, or c) wait a while to save for a new lower tier mb and processor like an i5-8400? As for the rest of my system I have a gtx 1050 ti, 12 gb of ram, and a 750 watt Corsair psu.

Just go for like an R5 1600/2600 + ASrock Pro 4 + 16GBs of fastest>cheapest DDR4 kit you can find

that platform is dead.

Are you using Premiere or Vegas?

B450 boards are coming soon enough for guaranteed bios updates for Ryzen 2000.

That looks like a really good combo for me although I am just trying to stick with as much of what I have as I can since I’m  only 15 and I would like to spend as little as possible on this. I’m using premier btw.

Then why use premiere since there's a monthly fee for it? Vegas Pro 14 goes on sale to $20 sometimes on humble bundle, or Movie Studio Platinum can be found on the cheap on steam sometimes.

There's 0 point in buying any new CPU for that platform.

You could also just look into a used R5 1400 which should be around $100 and just using 8GBs of DDR4

I just use premier because that’s what I use for school and it’s the software that I’m most comfortable with and Im fine with the monthly fee too that’s not a worry for me. Also a used processor also seems like a good option. would there be any reason to not buy a used mb while I’m at it.

Used motherboards are the problem when trying to buy used CPUs. Prices are usually too high for it to be worth it unless you can find a local deal on something like an i7 4000 or better

Oh makes sense. Im right near a microcenter with a lot of open box deals and combo deals on motherboards so I suppose that would be a good place to start. Thanks for all the help

Probably stick to AM4 in any event for the upgrade path if you're getting a modern CPU, and don't go below the ASrock Pro4

Here's a preliminary look at B450 boards as well.

I was just looking at an open box deal for a b350 ASUS strix board for $88 and pairing that with a r5 2600

Or just do that, motherboard may need a BIOS update though.

That would put it a bit ahead of an R5 1400/1500X, but it comes at the cost of still being on a dead platform, and the trouble with trying to get that CPU to run.
