Hi,

I've got a Corsair H60 which came with a 4pin PWM fan.

I'm planning on getting an additional Corsair static pressure fan which is a 3 pin, however I want to use a splitter to use the same CPU fan header on the motherboard for both the fans.

Is this likely to cause any problems if one fan is a PWM and the other isn't? Will I still be able to control them properly?

Cheers

If you get a 4 pin splitter it should work perfectly.

Corsair sell 4 pin SP fans.

If you plug in a 3 pin fan to a pwm splitter it will run at 100%, usually, depending on the splitter type.

Hmm, so there's a chance it might not work.

Might just be worth buying the slightly more expensive 4pin SP fans then. I know these are fairly similar to those that come with the H60, but that one seems to be quite loud. Do you know if these SP fans are any quieter?

not knocking your thoughts, but adding a second fan to that H60 will maybe lower

CPU temp 3°-4°, but suffer from bleeding ear syndrome.

problem about using quieter fans is they are quieter (lower RPM) but tend to run

with warmer temperatures under load. by the time you have in purchasing a

second fan (or two fans) you have spent well above what a high-end air-cooler

could do. just a thought before sinking more money into something with no

bigger return in performance.

Well the way pwm (4 pin) works is by supplying full voltage but turning the fan on and off quickly via the signal on the 4th pin. If you attach a 3 pin fan it will just run at fill voltage.

(if the splitter has a resistor it will obv run at lower speed.. but idk which you plan to use.)

Also, SP fans aren't too good. See airdeano's post.

Hey,

I actually broke a blade off one of my case fans the other week so I needed to replace that one anyway - it was pulling through a fan filter at the front so I guessed I'd buy a 2 pack of SP fans and try the other out on the radiator.

If I find that its too noisy, I may just do a straight swap from the stock fan to one of the new ones as I believe they come with the rubberized corners to reduce vibration.

I'll let you know if it works or not. If not, it may be easier just to plug the second fan into a chassis fan header on the motherboard and control the fan separately... Ideally it would be better to use the cpu fan header for both though.
