PC keeps randomly shutting off?

Go to solution Solved by Maggie_The_Meme_Machine,

UPDATE: My CPU fan header wasn’t plugged in. I’m an idiot.

So I just rebuilt my pc last night (needed to remount the radiator and add another standoff underneath the motherboard) I just booted up this morning, and it posted. It then went to windows logo, and shut off. No blue screen or error code, just shut off. I tried turning it on again, and it didn’t even make it to post. I’ve tried it a couple more times, and sometimes it makes it all the way to me opening up Chrome or trying to start up discord, but then does the same thing: shuts off. I opened up my pc and replugged in all the power button wires and such, it did the same thing. Any advice?

Windows 10 64 bit

AMD 8320 FX CPU

1tb WD Blue HDD

250gb San Disk SSD

ASUS 1060 OC GPU

Gigabyte 970a-DS3P Motherboard

EVGA 600-Watt PSU

is the psu old in any case?

if nothing works i would try to factory reset windows, reinstall windows on it.

If that does not work it must be something physical in the pc

I bought it less than a year ago, so no I don’t believe so.

Why did you need to install another stand-off as well? Was it working before you added the stand-off?

It was freezing before hand, due to a standoff shorting the Mobo out. I removed that one, and moved it where it was actually needed.

I don't think it's an overheating issue...but double check if it's installed correctly, where thermal paste etc. So when you say turning off...it's not freezing, it actually shuts down and the fans stop spinning, screen black?

Correct. It’s as if I flipped the switch on the back of the PSU. It just shuts off.

Ok, so now we have to start testing the PSU now because it sounds like it's causing the issues.

  • You've already checked the power cables are in properly, motherboard and CPU being the two most important.
  • I would try and unplug the GPU power and (since the 8320FX doesn't have graphics) just test to see whether it shuts down after 2 or 3 minutes.

It still shuts off even after unplugging.

You, sir or madam, killed your motherboard or CPU, or possibly both. Very probably just the motherboard if your system actually managed to get into Windows.

I've killed multiple boards dealing with issues with standoffs being stuck under the board weirdly, the board being slightly bent by misaligned standoffs, and all sorts of weird stuff like that.

My bet is that if you replace the motherboard then the problem will go away. HOWEVER, do one thing before buying new hardware.

Take all of your hardware out of your case. Place it on a cardboard box. Make sure nothing is touching carpet. Now boot it up. Does it work?

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

What causes the issue though? Part of the PCB is bent out of shape and something is damaged or is because it can short out very easily when you make changes to the standoffs? I'm still pretty inexperienced...

It would be shorting, and that's if nothing is damaged.

I’ve also noticed that if i havent started it up in a bit, it will make it all the way to the desktop, then shut off. If i try to turn it back on right after, it makes it maybe 5 seconds, then shuts right back off. Sort of a refractionary period I guess.
