Should I build now?

Hi,

I have all the parts I need to build a pc, but I can’t decide if now is a good time to build one. Basically, there are few/no games coming out in the next year that I’m really looking forward to, that would likely utilize a hardware upgrade.

My current pc has an i5-2300 which lags on a lot of games, so I want to upgrade it. Planning on keeping my current GTX 960 and upgrading the CPU to the i3-8350K.

Should I bother to return everything and wait another year until there are games coming out that I care for, or will the change in performance between the 8350k and the 9350k (or equivalent) be more or less inconsequential?

Thanks!

Lol no terrible time to build.

Wait for the 7nm actual refresh for Ryzen and Vega.

This bullshit of adding more cores isn't pushing anyone or thing forward. We need actual nm reduction to get anywhere.

SO WAIT

Nonono not the 8350K. The 8400 is $2 more, or the R5 1600 is a bit less, and they both have much better performance.

Going for an old AMD bulldozer CPU will be worse than your current CPU. Which games are causing lag? The i5 2300 shouldn't be that bad even with its age

What is your budget?

What is your location?

These two parameters will tell us how to offer the best upgrade

My budget’s about $600, I care more about value and having a “good nuff” experience overall. Also trying to make good use of my 1080p 144hz monitor.

located in the US

And that’s $600 not including GPU (at least not this year, I’ll upgrade that in the future to save money now.

PCPartPicker part list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Vb6YXP
Price breakdown by merchant: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Vb6YXP/by_merchant/

CPU: AMD - Ryzen 5 1600 3.2GHz 6-Core Processor  ($149.99 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: Gigabyte - X470 AORUS ULTRA GAMING ATX AM4 Motherboard  ($109.99 @ Newegg)
Memory: GeIL - SUPER LUCE RGB SYNC 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory  ($147.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $407.97

Leftover money for GPU next year and then a final CPU upgrade the year after that again. This plattform will offer excellent upgradability in the future at the cost of some performance now

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t Ryzen generally better for people who want to stream and video edit and that type of stuff? I only care about FPS, which is why I picked intel.

But now that you mention it, I could build a ryzen system now and upgrade the cpu in a couple years...

my friend had the same idea to get excellent parts but wait ages. i just think it is meaningless suffering. i would get a 1060 with i5 8100 and  a good mother board and 4gb of  ddr4 ram in this order. assuming u can still use ur old parts such as case, psu etc.

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/cBfpr6.  cpu and gpu are the most important for improving game fps.

Ryzen is good for a lot of things. It does preffer heavily threaded wornloads, but for budget builds it offer good longevity and promising CPU upgrades on the platform. Wich is why i picked a more expencive X470 board for you. Ryzen 3000/4000 is expected to surpass Intel in singlethread performance untill intel gets their 10nm going (late 2019). 2019 is going to be a crazy hardware year. 7nm Ryzen in April, (nvidia cards early autumn?), Navi in autumn, 10nm intel late autumn-early winter.

Grabbing an 8400 is not that bad of an idea as that CPU will last you many years. If you want the 8400 for better performance now just grab an B360 PRO4 board from ASrock
