Knowing the UK...

In rural north Wales where speeds of 4 mbps are the stuff of dreams, those people wonder what needs to happen for them to enter the 1990's

I am in rural midwest US, and have had access to gigabit service for a couple years.

I wish things would progress faster, isps seem to charge enough to fund these upgrades.

I'm in Cheshire and get 72 MB/sec download and 20 MB/sec upload.

 

If you go out a bit further to rural Cheshire, its patchy but getting better. north Wales will be the same. Patchy based on locations. If you're in a populated area of north Wales like Mold, Bangor, or similar you'll get decent line-speeds but if you're on a farm in Snowdonia then you'll be looking at alternatives.

 

Its no different in England. On the outskirts of a major town my business gets 40 MB/sec download via a satellite connection. But we pay through the nose. 1 mile away in the town itself you're talking 20 to 100 MB/sec speeds without that.

 

Lines go where populations are generally.

 

If you're a small business owner - line speed is a primary consideration on where to locate a business, if you need data connections like we do.

From what I have heard (actual prices aren't given) the companies have agreed to discount the contract as part of a deal with the council. It was meant to be of a comparable price to current internet packages that "the public" would use.

 

That would put it in the ballpark of £30 per month if it's an accurate statement. This is 100% pure conjecture though. I am not a credible source!

Tell me about it, I only have BT and SKY offering coverage in my area (and for those not in the UK they both use BT cables anyway) They kept saying they would install fibre for home customers, and did...to the cabinet...in the business park...5 miles away from the city center...and about 7 miles from where the majority of people actually live. Thanks BT, I now get a blistering 3mbps down and 0.5 up

Atleast they have internet. Over 6% of US residents still have no internet not by choice either
