What’s the deal with the thunderbolt licensing with AMD?

I have an Asrock X399 Professional Gaming motherboard with a TB3 header, but currently there are still no compatible cards.

I have heard that Gigabyte last fall teased TB3 on the Designare board. I have also heard that Intel is supposed to be open sourcing TB3 or licensing it to AMD this year.

Is this still coming?

I have a designare x399 and can confirm it does NOT work with the current BIOS.  I have heard back and forth that you will, or wont, need an add in card so it sounds like things are still very fluid.  Unfortunately, I have also not seen a commitment date for when it will work.

Wendell from Level 1 Techs is working on something for that.

But what do you need thunderbolt for exactly?

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

AFAIK Intel developed TB in conjunction with someone  else (Apple?) and it is now being made opensource. I doubt they'll come this gen or maybe even next gen but eventually AMD will have it

Intel made the standard royalty free. In fact there are already plenty of AMD motherboards shipping with a thunderbolt connector

AMD Ryzen R7 1700 (3.8ghz) w/ NH-D14, EVGA RTX 2080 XC (stock), 4*4GB DDR4 3000MT/s RAM, Gigabyte AB350-Gaming-3 MB, CX750M PSU, 1.5TB SDD + 7TB HDD, Phanteks enthoo pro case
