Definetly dont get the z130's i have them sadly, lets say yu get what you pay for... basically they sound like crap.  If you are willing to spend some money get the logitexh z623's, they are around $100 and totally worth it, if you listen to "Top 100" songs or even some dubstep, house, electro these would be great, amazing subwoofer, i also own these after i was done with the z130's.. with the 130's after you turn the volume up about half way, they sound very distorted.. if $100 dollars is a bit to much, go with the logitech z523's, i dont own these but i hear they are great.. They are around $70 (on amazon) and they have a 6.5in subwoofer either the z623's or the z523's would be a great choice.

Speakers are speakers unless you want supreme audio quality, personally I prefer 2.1 over 2.0 just cos the sub gives some extra punch in games but there are some decently priced 2.0 sets out there. As for breaking them..... only if you're planning on playing stuff at high volume or throwing the speakers around the room. If you're going to be using them at a reasonable volume and they're not going to be moving from your desk then I don't think quality should be an issue. I mean if you have something that feels 'fragile' then treat carefully and it will last. Personally I'm running Creative Labs SBS A200s and they do the job. The quality isn't amazing but a bit of tweaking here and there and I can get a decent sound out of them. If I need to do anything where sound quality is an issue I plug in nice set of headphones instead.

I personally am in love with the older X-530 5.1 Logitech set. It's amazing for the price, I got mine used for $50, 3 years ago, and then upgraded to the what I think is the direct upgrade the z506 set.

I blew the z506 set within a month, switched back to the X-530, and it's still going hard :)

Besides no bass because there is no bass speaker I think your over dramatizing the sound like shit part because they really don't for the money you pay.

It'd be worth it to get some used bookshelf speakers off eBay instead of whatever shitty computer speakers fits in your budget.

I gave up on computer speakers years ago. My last set was a (now discontinued) Logitech Z-2300. Unless you haven't heard better, they suck.

Small bookshelf speakers sound ridiculously better. An awesome setup runs around $300-$400 new, or $50-$200 used. All you need is a bit of space. Here I'm using stands to conserve desk space. Note how large the speakers are in comparison to the 21" LCD:

A typical computer speaker uses a single driver in each speaker, maybe with a tiny bass port. This keeps cost very low and size very small. A better speaker (i.e., bookshelf speakers) use multiple drivers and a tweeter to separate lows/mids/highs. It's easy to understand why dedicated drivers for each frequency range result in better sound. Here's an example:

http://www.amazon.com/JBL-ES20-High-Performance-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B00167340E/ref=zg_bs_3236451011_12

http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-TX-8255B-TX-8255-Stereo-Receiver/dp/B001AMSPQI/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1388357312&sr=1-5&keywords=onkyo+receiver

If that's out of your budget, you can probably find an old receiver and bookshelf speakers on Craigslist. One of my used setups cost < $50 and destroys every Logitech speaker I've heard.

Subwoofers: Depends on you and the speakers you choose. Few speakers can accurately reproduce sounds below 80Hz. A sub enhances the experience, especially if you appreciate bass. I only turn on my subs for gaming or serious music listening when the wife isn't home. These were pulled from my car almost 10 years ago:

True.. but $100 is like 4x the amount lol I think the best he could do unless he saves up is go on craiglist

i was really just looking for something cheap for the ocational youtube video or so that i watch with my sister. i am getting good headphones for 99% of my daily use. I think that I will upgrade to some real speakers once i graduate in a years and would rather spend $25 to tide me over than $100 or so.

just wanted to make sure the cheap speakers wouldn't break in a month.

Spend $50 and you'll get some decent speakers with a woofer but $25 probably won't cut it

My personal option is is if you are just going to listen to you tube video with your sister  just something personably priced from your local pc shop etc , and if you are going to be using your headphones for the rest of the time and you want good quality sound either buy a DAC  or Headphone amplifier.

You sir are obviously as a audio nut who appreciates good sound and quality  as shown in the pictures above unless the guy is planning on becoming a audio engineer etc he is not goin to need a such a extravagant setup like yours.

as for the remark about about the logitech Z2-300 sucking. for a pc speaker setup they go pretty hard for what t he are compared to your setup  as yes i am looking to upgrade to a much better setup  :).
